Chapter Five

Evergreen

Age 13

The quiet stillness of night was interrupted by the screams of my mother. Blood leaked from her neck as she collapsed onto the wooden floor of our cottage. The hunter stood above her, his face shielded by a black mask.
I was hiding in my closet right where Mother had hid me. I didn't stir until I heard the front door slam shut and the footsteps grew quiet. It was only then that I creaked open the closet door only to find the body of my mother in our living room.
I slept by her side on the floor that night. In the morning, I buried her body in our backyard. I placed a simple rose on the dirt above her. It reminded me of her. Simple. Beautiful. Pure. A memory now lost to time.
I traced the indentations of the brick with the tips of my fingers. Now I understand why we were never to go over this wall. My only hope is that the man who took the light out of my life would be sentenced to death.
