Chapter Twenty Five
Evergreen
We would launch a surprise attack on the castle in the morning. Brikwood seemed to be troubled by something, but what it was, I did not know. I sat next to him at the edge of the bed.
"Something wrong?"
He quickly shook his head.
"No."
He was a bad liar.
"Something is wrong. Tell me."
I begged. He sighed and lay back on the bed.
"You know I'd never hurt you, right?"
He admitted this question as if he was looking for confirmation from me that it was true. I lay back next to him.
"Of course. Why do you say that?"
He shrugged.
"Bad dream."
I nodded, though I was convinced there was more to it. It didn't appear he was going to give additional context. I slid my hand into his.
"Talk to me."
I pleaded, but he gave no response. I sighed. I wanted to comfort him, but I didn't know how.
His breathing had slowed beside me. I was surprised to find that he had fallen asleep.
I smiled to myself as I quietly settled into my own bed. Soon, I fell asleep, too.
