Chapter Fifteen
Brikwood

The army was taken captive in the dungeons of the castle I called home. The woman I loved was unconscious and bleeding out. My clan had won. I had been promoted to the position of knighthood. I sat on a throne made of gold next to my queen's. I was dressed in robes of purple and finery.
But I wasn't happy. This wasn't what I wanted. This wasn't how it was supposed to go! All I had ever wanted was to prove myself to this woman. Now I have. But my mind and my heart could only think of one thing. The one person I'd just betrayed.
Evergreen. Evergreen. Evergreen. Her name repeated itself in my head as if I could make her come back to me. Evergreen.
I didn't sleep. I didn't eat. My thoughts were consumed with visions of her. Her long, flowing blonde hair. Her chocolate brown eyes. Everything about her.
Was she still alive? Where was she now? Was she safe? My thoughts led me outside and into the castle gardens.
I found a bench surrounded by roses. The moon shone brightly down on me, illuminating my face. That's when the tears came. I no longer saw the garden, the castle, or the moon. I only saw her.
The woman I loved. The woman I had betrayed. The woman was most likely no longer alive. The sobs came fast, choking me, blinding me. My chest heaved in and out, desperate for air.
I saw the bodies of my parents. I saw Evergreen bleeding. It was too much. Too much!
I ran. I ran all throughout the night and into the morning until my legs gave out. I was asleep before I hit the ground.
