Chapter Eight
Brikwood

She approached me slowly. Was it really her? As she got closer, the fire illuminated her face. Evergreen. Recognition swept over her face, and she turned sharply to leave. I wouldn't let her. I grabbed her hand and pulled her down next to me. She didn't look at me when she said,
"So you're one of them."
What did she know about me?
"Are you lost? You're supposed to be on the opposite side of the wall."
She glared at me as her hawk stretched out its wings and curled up by the fire.
"Why were you on my soil that day?"
She asked me.
"You're not welcome there."
I smirked.
"You're not welcome here, Evergreen."
"I asked you first."
She demanded.
"I was hunting. Plain and simple. Your turn."
She hesitated a moment before answering.
"I'm here to avenge my mother's death."
"By?"
I asked. She continued.
"By joining my army to fight the clan that killed her."
She said firmly. The words were out of my mouth before I could stop them.
"Don't play the victim here, girl. You're supposed "good" clan took the lives of both of my parents."
She looked shocked and hurt. She turned away. I bit my lip. Had I gone too far? She turned back to me.
"I'm sorry for your loss,"
was all she said.
"I'm sorry for yours."
I responded. We ate in silence. Once she had her share, Evergreen stood up to leave. I took her hand more gently this time.
"You should stay here."
She looked surprised.
"You don't know your way around these woods. You might get lost."
Then she smiled. I never realized what a beautiful smile she had. We lay beside the campfire staring at the moon until we could stare no longer.
