The atmosphere was thick with tension as you walked into the room, catching the attention of both Rafe and JJ, their faces twisting with varying emotions the second they saw you. It had been a year, and the silence between you all had hardened, turning what used to be fun rivalry and attraction into something colder, something jagged.
You stepped forward, a smirk playing on your lips. "The three of us together, just like old times," you mused, your voice dripping with sarcasm. "The Kook who loved me too much and the Pogue who didn't love me enough."
Rafe snorted, his gaze sharpening as he folded his arms. "And the evil slut Kook who only loved herself."
A laugh slipped out before you could stop it. "What happened to you, Rafe? You used to be sweet and polite."
He took a step closer, his eyes cold, the bitterness of the last year evident in every word. "Oh, that part of me died a long time ago."
"Good," you shot back, meeting his gaze without flinching. "He was a bore."
The silence thickened until JJ finally broke it, crossing his arms and looking at you with a mixture of hurt and resignation. "What are you doing here, Y/N? It's been a year."
"I must admit, I was a bit jealous." You glanced between the two of them, the bitterness simmering beneath your lighthearted tone. "You found Sofia, and you found Kie. And who's the one left standing alone?" You spread your arms, shrugging as if it didn't matter. "Me. How does that happen?"
Rafe scoffed, shaking his head. "That's what happens when you don't care about anyone but yourself."
You rolled your eyes, but the sting of his words hit deeper than you'd let on. "Urgh, but I miss the days when you two used to fight over me," you said, leaning back and tossing a careless smile their way, almost as if challenging them to bring it up again.
JJ looked away, hurt flashing in his eyes, while Rafe's gaze turned dark, a storm brewing as he clenched his jaw. And for a brief moment, you could see the ghosts of what you once had with both of them — the love, the jealousy, and all the moments that could've been but never were.
Rafe's gaze lingered on you, his smirk twisting into something darker as he took a step closer, closing the distance between you. "You miss it, huh?" he murmured, voice low. "The attention, the drama — the both of us fighting over the girl who thought she was untouchable."
You held his gaze, unflinching. "Maybe I do. Can't help it if neither of you were ever enough on your own."
JJ's jaw tightened, his eyes narrowing as he glanced between you and Rafe. "Right. And I'm sure that's why you bailed and disappeared on both of us, yeah?"
You looked between them, feeling the heat of their stares. "Funny," you said, keeping your voice steady even though your heart was pounding. "It sounds like you two haven't stopped thinking about me, either." You let your gaze flick between them, taunting.
JJ scoffed, a dry laugh escaping him as he shook his head. "You're still playing games, Y/N. This whole act—walking back into our lives like you didn't rip us apart? It's getting old."
You scoffed, turning to face JJ. "Please. As if you weren't the one with one foot out the door the entire time. The 'Pogue who didn't love me enough' — you made sure to live up to that title, didn't you, JJ?"
JJ's jaw clenched, the familiar flicker of regret darkening his eyes. "It wasn't like that, and you know it."
"Oh, right," you sneered, turning your back to him. "Then explain it to me, because all you ever did was make up excuses. Too scared to admit you wanted me but not scared enough to let me go."
Behind you, Rafe's hand grabbed your arm, spinning you around to face him, his voice a low growl. "And yet you still chose him." His fingers tightened, his eyes daring you to deny it. "You had me, Y/N. But you couldn't handle someone who actually loved you back."
The venom in his words stung, but you matched his intensity, leaning in until your faces were inches apart. "You're right, Rafe. You were too much, too suffocating, too... predictable."
His jaw ticked as he pulled you closer, his breath hot against your ear. "Maybe you're just afraid that, deep down, you liked that someone needed you that much. Needed you more than you even need yourself."
You met his gaze, defiant, leaning in so you were almost nose to nose. "I thought you loved the chaos Rafe." You looked at JJ, raising a brow. "And you, JJ? I know you want to hate me, but we both know you can't. You never could because here you both are," you shot back, feeling the thrill of the push and pull, the heat of their anger only fuelling your own. "Seems like I'm not the only one who can't let go."
JJ stepped forward, eyes blazing as he looked between you and Rafe. "You walk in here like nothing's changed, like you can still have either of us whenever you want."
You turned to face him, something dark and defiant lighting up inside you. "Maybe I can."
Without warning, you reached up, grabbing the back of JJ's neck and pulling him down into a kiss, fierce and desperate. For a second, he froze, then his hands found your waist, pulling you closer. But just as quickly as it started, you pulled away, breathless, leaving him dazed.
Turning, you faced Rafe, who looked like he was about to explode. Before he could say anything, you grabbed his shirt and yanked him forward, kissing him with the same intensity. He didn't hesitate, hands tangling in your hair as he pressed into you, the taste of anger and unspoken words filling the air between you.
Breaking the kiss, you stepped back, chest heaving as you looked at both of them, feeling the weight of all the tension, all the hurt that lingered between you three.
"See?" You smirk. "I guess I wasn't wrong after all."
