Chapter Fifteen: See the Light

Hey

Hey. What are you doing?

Nothing – I'm feeling cooped up. Is it crazy to say I miss working?

Not crazy. I'm always the same.

Mm... I don't miss my boss tho.

Tho?

Haha. It means though.

Why didn't you just type the extra letters?

IDK. Quicker.

IDK? What?

OMG, Spencer. It means 'I don't know.' Have you never texted before? I hope you've heard of OMG.

I have texted before. Hotch doesn't use IDK.

You make me laugh.

Sarcasm?

Partially.

Fine.

I was going to text you anyway – there's a street fair going on nearby for the Festival of Light. Want to check it out?

Today?

Yeah. In an hour.

Okay, I'll meet you there.

The fair was bustling with vibrant colours and laughter that spilled over the winding rows of stalls. The smell of street food and spices mingled with a hint of fresh popcorn, making Harper's stomach growl despite herself. She felt a thrill of anticipation mixed with a hint of nervousness she couldn't shake—being here with Spencer felt different, almost like a first date.

A few minutes later, she spotted him. Spencer was glancing around with an uncertain smile that brightened the moment he saw her. He wore mismatched blue socks—one checkered with yellow and the other dotted with red circles—peeking over his black Converse. A dark green cardigan covered his typical shirt and tie, giving him an endearing, almost scholarly look.

He's just so... Spencer, she thought, feeling her cheeks warm as he approached.

"Hey," he greeted her, looking a little unsure of himself but smiling in that gentle way of his.

"Hi." She smiled back, trying not to stare too long. "Love the socks, by the way."

He looked down, chuckling. "Oh, um... it's meant to be good luck. The mismatch."
