Chapter 36

Sunday morning at breakfast an owl dropped a letter in front of Alexis. She could barely contain her excitement as she realized Remus had finally responded to her letter. She rushed out into the courtyard for some solitude to read his letter.

Little Lex,

I'm not sure why you have such a sudden interest in this subject but besides being good friends who wanted to help me in the early days of my transition they also just found the concept of being Animagi fascinating. Peter did have to start over once right before the end of the mandrake leaf phase. It's hard to say if they were nervous because they were too cool to admit it but I can't imagine not being nervous with all the ways the spell can go wrong. I think finding out your animal can be an eye-opening experience sometimes it is a good one and sometimes it can be a hard revelation. Finding out what is your true nature can be difficult sometimes.
I know that Sirius wanted me to be the one to take over for him but Alexis with everything going on and my condition it is safer for you with the Weasleys. I have loved getting to be a part of you growing up and I wish I could do more. You are so very special and once this is all over I would be honored to have you stay with me but for now let's focus on keeping you safe.

                         -Remus

Alexis knew she wasn't going through this alone anymore but she still felt all isolated as she sat thinking about everything that was coming. Her friends would all be a month behind her and unless a storm held off for them she would go through her transformation by herself.

Her Patronus was a Phoenix, did that mean her Animagus form would be too? But hadn't she read that an animagus form couldn't be magical? It also didn't seem like the best way to hide considering how attention-drawing they were. Alexis waited in her group's usual spot knowing eventually the boys would show up.

She didn't have to wait long before she could hear their voices getting closer. They smiled as they rounded the corner and saw her sitting there waiting on them. Draco sat down beside her kissing her softly, "So did Remus' letter help? Did you learn anything new?"

"Yeah, I guess, I'm not sure what I was hoping for honestly. I suppose he can't help with what I really want. Just to have more time with them you know," she shrugged as she stared down at the letter in her hand.

"Have you guys thought about the animal you might become yet? I read that it can be the same as your Patronus but not always. I don't think an animagus form can be a magical creature either so I'm not sure what mine might be," she looked at her friends hoping they were feeling anything like her at that moment.

"Wait why would anyone be worried about what they turn into? You get to become an animal why would that ever be bad?" Theo looked at his friends slightly confused.

Enzo smacked his palm against his head dramatically, "Okay your animagus form is an animal that represents who you are in your deepest essence. Now if that animal was a rat or a buzzard or something else like that would that not be a bit shattering to know? That the essence of who you are is a rat or a scavenger bird, don't you think that would mess with you?"

"Wait that's possible? You guys don't think I'd be a rat right!?" Theo started looking down at himself horrified he was about to sprout a tail.

Alexis was fighting down the urge to laugh as she took his hand, "Theo I don't think you would be a rat, maybe a hawk or something. Definitely something more majestic than a rat."

"Well, I don't know my Patronus either Theo so we are in the same boat," Draco laughed as he commiserated with his new friend.

"Isn't your Patronus a dog Enzo?" Alexis asked looking over at her friend.
