Chapter 14

The next morning as Mattheo woke to Alexis getting out of bed he felt different, he couldn't put his finger on why but there was something off. He leaned up on his elbows as he watched her getting ready to leave. He felt a draw to her, not the usual draw but a pull that was almost impossible to resist. She was like a black hole and her gravity was pulling him in.

He couldn't fight it as he walked over wrapping his arms around her from behind. He nuzzled his face into her hair and breathed in the intoxicating scent that was just her. "Don't go, just come back and stay in bed with me all day," he was desperate not to be away from her. Just the thought of her being gone long enough to get dressed and meet him downstairs was maddening.

She slowly turned to face him, taking his face in her hands, "We have too much to do to stay in bed all day. I'll be back with you before you know it." She was surprised by the desperate tone in his voice.

She knew if Draco caught her sneaking out of the boy's dorms he could make her life miserable. She still couldn't understand how he of all people got chosen as prefect. His face popped into her mind as she lay there and she was confused as to why she would think of him at a time like this.

She left their room and tried to take the stairs as quietly as possible. Just as she thought she was in the clear an arm shot out of the Prefects room and pulled her inside closing the door behind her. "What the hell Draco!?" She said pulling herself free of his grasp.

"Have you lost your mind, Alexis? Do you have any idea how many people saw your little light show last night? I told you to be careful, so what do you do? You decide to piss off the Dark Lord by taking Riddle home for Christmas and now you're doing Merlin only knows what in the Astronomy Tower." He ran his hands through his hair frustration bubbling over.

"He didn't want to go home he was afraid what was I supposed to do?"

"Let him stay here, don't take him home. Alexis, you don't comprehend the amount of danger you are in," Draco yelled pinning her between the wall and his body. His hands were on both sides of her head keeping her in place. "Alexis, you are pushing him and he is teetering between two drastic choices right now, killing you or forcing you to join him. I don't know why I care so much but the thought of either of those two things happening to you is eating me up inside."

His words echoed in her mind, reminding her of the prophecy she was meant to fulfill. She reached up cupping his cheek, "I'll be ok don't worry about me."

He leaned into her hand, "I can't stop worrying about you but you should go, I don't want Mattheo seeing you come out of my room." She nodded and slipped out running up to her own room.

She sat in front of her mirror trying to see the difference she felt. She couldn't see it herself but she felt like everyone else would be able to somehow. She had told Mattheo she loved him and last night made her feel something that she couldn't describe. She loved Mattheo but she couldn't seem to keep Draco out of her head. He was so confusing, one minute he was kind and caring then the next he was a giant ass.

She felt it even now, a tug in her core that was pulling her in two different directions. Not knowing how she was supposed to feel anymore she just threw on her clothes and ran down the stairs to the common room. She saw her group waiting on her and ran up to them.

Mattheo took her hand leading her out of the common room with a nod for their group to follow. His hand found her waist as he silently led everyone out to their spot in the courtyard. No one spoke until Mattheo pulled out a cigarette, lit it, and took a long hard pull.

"How many people saw the flames" he asked them in a quiet dangerous voice. The three boys glanced at each other awkwardly. "Spit it out for fucks sake!" Mattheo roared his dark eyes flickering with a strange green tinge. Theo finally shrugged deciding to be the one to tell them, "Anyone who was outside had to have seen what looked like an explosion of green light." Alexis looked at them in shock. No wonder Draco has seemed so upset. "There's never been anything like that before, I don't understand what that means."

"Maybe it has something to do with the creepy green flicker in Mattheo's eyes right now," Blaise pipped up uncomfortably doing his best to not look back at the terrifying power of Mattheo's eyes. Alexis popped up from her seat grabbing Matty's face and turning him to look at her. Her hand dropped at the sight of his eyes. The normal stormcloud effect his eyes normally had was gone, replaced by wicked-looking black flames tinged in a dark green. Her chest began to tighten and breathing seemed impossible as she began to take rapid small breaths. She began muttering no over and over. What had they done? What happened last night between them had obviously changed everything.

She grasped his hand dragging him away, she went straight to the Great Hall eyes searching for one person. She stormed up to the platform where some of the professors were already eating breakfast. The toad started to comment on the rule of male and female students touching but Alexis cut her off, "Professor Snape, I need to speak with you, immediately sir." With a curt nod, he swept out of his seat leading the couple to his office. He promptly locked the door before Delores could follow them in. He turned to her waiting for her to explain herself.

"Something happened, I don't know why but it seems I have inadvertently passed certain qualities to Mattheo," she was almost frantic as she pointed to his eyes which were still flickering. Snape leaned in looking fascinated by the phenomenon in front of him. "I don't believe I want to know the circumstances in which this happened. But I believe this may be beyond me, we need to speak to Dumbledore."

He led them out the door completely ignoring Umbridge as she demanded an explanation. As they approached the entrance to Dumbledore's office her shoes still clacked behind them. Snape sent them on as he explained to Delores that this was a house issue, not a ministry problem, and turned on his heel leaving the toad fuming.

Dumbledore looked up from his desk as the three entered his office, "Miss Black, Mr. Riddle, to what do I owe the pleasure of your company?" His eyes found Snape's as a silent conversation passed between the two. "Tell him," Snape ordered as he crossed his arms. Alexis took a deep breath before launching into an explanation of how Mattheo seemed to be showing signs of power only she had previously. Mattheo, who was having trouble calming down, especially after being dragged about the castle, was exuding a dangerous aura. "Would anyone care to explain what the hell is going on?" Mattheo spat growing more furious by the second.

"Why don't the two of you take a seat, thank you Professor Snape I will take it from here," He said with a nod to Severus. After the students had sat in front of him Dumbledore started again, "Mattheo, Alexis, may I assume this change came after a, how shall I say this? A significant step forward in your relationship." Alexis blushed deeply as Mattheo nodded affirmatively. "I see, well it would seem that a part of your connection has been slowly merging your magical abilities. Mr. Riddles is more evident as Alexis' abilities seem to be a bit more flashy. However Alexis I wouldn't be surprised if you have gained things from Mr. Riddle as well, such as parcel tongue and a proficiency at Legilimency."

Alexis's jaw dropped, "You can read minds?" she questioned a little too loudly. Mattheo shrugged awkwardly with an uncomfortable grin. She gave him a look that said we will talk about this later before looking back to Dumbledore, "But sir I don't understand, why or how this happened."

Dumbledore didn't respond right away, he contemplated for a minute or two before he responded. "Alexis, you and Mattheo as you know are part of a centuries-old prophecy, one that doesn't just affect the wizarding world but everyone. Your choice in the battle to come will change the face of humanity. I hate to put such a weight on the shoulders of those so young but it cannot be helped. I have watched the two of you for years hoping that your connection would wait. But it would seem that fate had its own plans. Part of the prophecy was that young lovers would find each other uniting as one they would lead the world to the light of a new age or descend it into darkness and horror. We could not have foreseen that the uniting part would be quite so literal. Alexis' abilities somehow caused a bridge between the two of you that seemed to have forged permanently with the union of your powers. I do not know the extent of this bridge, you must discover that for yourselves I'm afraid. But be wary, such a deep connection can cause turmoil. Try to control your emotions, as your partner will feed off of them and you will get to where there will be no distinction left between what is yours and what is theirs."

The two of them started to leave feeling overwhelmed by the magnitude of the consequences of their choices. Alexis thought miserably, "What are we going to do now?" She jumped startled by Mattheo's voice responding in her head, "I don't know." Their eyes met as they realized what just happened. "Shit," they both exclaimed in horror.
