"Y/n?"

The voice snapped me back to reality, and I blinked, looking up at the person calling me.

"Yes?" I responded, probably sounding a little lost.

"You're next. You can head in now." they said, guiding me towards the door.

My stomach somehow felt uneasy like i was about to throw up any second.

I decided to join for this audition just for Duke. I was never really planning to succeed or anything.

In fact , I hadn't even prepared anything! I was supposed to fail --- that was the whole point.

"Hello, I'm Y/N, and, uh... I'll be singing..." I hesitated, my mind flipping through every overdone song I could think of.

Something that would bore them right out of their chairs. Something forgettable , something they've heard a million times.

"Call Me Maybe." I finally said, hoping it sounded just predictable enough.

And then, I started singing. I had prepared myself for the worst like a crack in my voice, maybe a loose note or two.

But to my surprise, I sounded... good? Like, really good. Better than I'd expected. I didn't know I could sound like this.

As I neared the song's ending , i just realised that i was doing well. Too well in fact. I needed to mess this up somehow, or they'd think I was taking this shit serious.

So, I threw in a few cracks here and there , missed a couple of notes on purpose , and let my pitch go uncontrolled.

Anything to make it look bad enough.

As I sang the last line, I took a shaky breath, hoping they'd bought my horrendous singing.

A heavy silence filled the room, and I could almost feel the tension thickening. I waited, half-expecting them to dismiss me on the spot.

I hid a small smile, thinking , 'Great, they totally bought it.'

But then , one of the judges leaned forward, breaking the silence. "Pardon me for asking, but...did you write this song?"

My eyes widened.

'What?! Have they never heard 'Call Me Maybe' before?' I scanned their faces, trying to make sense of it , wondering if this was some sort of prank.

"Uhm..." I stammered , unsure how to respond, but before I could answer I was interrupted by another judge.

"It's fine." they added with a reassuring smile. "We won't take credit for the song. Copyright, am I right?"

I forced a smile, but on the inside, I was panicking. I'd come here to fail , not to be mistaken for some undiscovered songwriter!

"Thank you for your time. You may head out now." one of the judges finally said, a saving grace that I immediately accepted.

With a nod, I turned and practically flew out of the room, only to be greeted by Daniel and Duke, clapping like I'd just won an award.

"That was so good! I didnt know you could sing that well!" Daniel cheered, while Duke nodded enthusiastically.

I couldn't help but laugh a little. They were like kids who'd just watched their first magic trick.

"Nah, I wasn't that good." I said, shaking my head. "I cracked my voice and went off pitch. I'm far from amazing if you ask me."

But they didn't seem convinced in any way.

They just rolled their eyes, and we bickered down the hall.
