"What? Pythagoras theorem? What the hell."
I cursed under my breath, narrowing my eyes at the mess of numbers on my math paper.

Across from me, Jay sat calm and composed, already flipping his notebook open like some kind of math wizard about to perform an ancient ritual.

Well yes , I did study well enough to get good-ish grades back then , I seemed to have forgotten only math.

Why was korean math this advance??

With a small smile, he started scribbling down diagrams and equations with ease. His pen glided smoothly across the paper, perfectly drawing out triangles like they were his best friends.

I, on the other hand, could only stare at my own paper in horror, the numbers blurring together into some weird code my brain refused to translate. I tilted my head, furrowing my brows as Jay tapped gently on the part where I messed up.

He pointed to one side of the triangle, then to the formula he'd written:
a² + b² = c²

Then he gestured slowly, motioning like :
See? Simple.

Simple, my ass.

I gave him a deadpan look. "Jay, you're literally speaking a whole different language right now."

He let out a silent chuckle, shoulders shaking slightly, then tapped my paper again and mouthed : Try again.

I sighed dramatically, as if my soul was physically leaving my body. My pencil hovered uselessly over the problem, my brain fully rejecting any further input.

Slowly, my eyelids grew heavier, and before I knew it, I was falling asleep with my eyes open, or at least, it felt like it.

My head bobbed slightly, my vision growing foggy as numbers danced around like mocking little goblins.

Jay noticed, gently nudging my arm to snap me back to reality. I jolted up slightly, blinking hard.

"I'm awake, I'm awake," I mumbled, though my brain was absolutely not awake.

Jay simply smiled softly, clearly amused but patient as ever.

The classroom buzzed faintly around us with pens scribbling, papers flipping, someone quietly whispering answers to their friend two rows behind me.

Time dragged painfully slow as I continued to battle the cursed triangle.

And then-

BRRRRIIIIINNNGGG!

The sharp ring of the recess bell echoed through the classroom like salvation itself.

I practically shot up from my chair. "Saved by the bell," I muttered with a sigh of relief, stretching my arms up as if I just survived a war.

Jay chuckled silently again, closing his notebook as he stood up beside me. I gave him a grateful pat on the shoulder.

"You're a lifesaver, but I swear math is out to kill me."

He simply gave me a thumbs-up, his usual subtle way of saying 'you'll survive'.

And just like that, we headed out for recess.

Heading to the cafeteria, the familiar buzz of lunchtime chatter filled the air. The scent of food was already luring half the school in, and my stomach growled in approval.

As I made my way through the crowd, I spotted Zack being usual as he was all stuck next to Mira.

Perfect.

With a grin, I practically skipped over and slipped right behind Mira, draping my arms over her shoulders like a koala.

"Miraaaaa," I sang in an exaggerated tone, "it's your favourite person in the whole wide world. Me!"
