Includes: Kai angst. That's it. Set in the original universe, no fanon, just Kai being sad that his sister became an ocean BECAUSE HE DESERVED TO GRIEVE, NINJAGO >:(
(Y'all this was supposed to be a part to another story but I never ended up writing that other part 😭)

The grass waved and the fairy lights swung in the gentle night time breeze. Crickets chirped, leaves rustled, and the stream trickled over pebbles.

Kai drew a deep, wobbly breath, taking in the atmosphere, and slowly blew it out, adjusting his position. He cleared his throat, and closed his eyes.

“Happy birthday to you…” A gust of wind bristled through Kai's hair. “Happy birthday to you…” He slowly opened his eyes, looking at his hand strumming the guitar strings. “Happy birthday, dear Nya…” Kai paused for a moment, biting his bottom lip. “Happy birthday to you…”

The breeze died down and a silence fell on the forest. The grass stopped waving and the fairy lights sighed a last swing. The crickets finished their song and the leaves bobbled to a stop, even the stream stopped clicking pebbles.

Kai’s vision got blurry and his left hand gripped his guitar tighter. He scrunched his eyes closed, pressing his lips together, trying to keep everything in, but a sob built up in his throat that he was too tired to stop.

He covered his eyes with his arm and tried to pull in his cries but they wouldn't stop. He set down his guitar against a tree and leaned forward, resting on his elbows, covering his face, doing everything he could to quieten his crying.

Eventually, covering his mouth, cheeks wet and eyes red, he looked up and slowly reached forward. He clicked the recording button and stopped the video.

I need to remember to cut that pathetic crying out…
