TW: SACRIFICE/LOSS
Includes: Kai and Nya angst, a sibling moment, and loss
(Again, this is one of my favs 🫢)“Go.” Nya spoke in barely a whisper, realising what she must do. The others looked at her in horror.
"What!?" Was all Kai and Jay could muster, Kai from the anger he felt, Jay from the panic he felt.
"Nya, no. We don't do that around here and you know that," Lloyd placed his hand on her shoulder. Nya closed her eyes, afraid of her own tears that had started forming. She hesitantly looked over her shoulder, her eyes glistening in the fiery backdrop that matched the hint of the sun, just barely peeking over the edge of the mountains, though no one had noticed the change of time amidst the chaos and flames.
"You know I have to, it's the only way to stop this, and you'd have to retreat either way, the flames are getting too big…" Nya's voice was wobbly as she faced her friends. Jay's breathing grew faster as he realised he was going to lose Nya again.
Again.
No. He wouldn't let it happen. Without thinking, Jay drew a breath, put on his most stern face and marched up to Nya. He grabbed her wrist and pulled her away into the direction of safety.
"Jay— What!? What are you doing!? I need to do this! I need to save Ninjago!! You know this is the only way!!" Nya resisted Jay as much as she could but she underestimated Jay's strength when he was serious. She panickedly looked back at the others who had all started following Jay with despair and loss in their eyes as he pulled her away. All except Kai. And that was exactly what Nya was afraid of.
She knew that there was more than just one way to end the endless curse of fire cast upon the city. Either to put out the source with a flood so powerful, it'd destroy the wielder of the force; or to pull the source out of the city, destroying the wielder of the force.
It was either her life, or Kai's. She knew Kai could live without her. And she also knew that she wouldn't be able to live without Kai. So there was only one logical solution.
Nya grew angry with Jay and all the others for not even noticing that Kai had hung back. She used that anger to rip her arm from Jay's grip, she ignored his yell and all the others as she ran past all of them. She crashed into Kai and tackled him to the ground, tears spilling down her cheeks, breathing heavily. Kai was calm. He wasn't surprised Nya had thrown him to the ground. He knew that she knew what the stakes were. He looked into her angry eyes with his sad ones and let tears fall as he knew what had to be done. The others ran up to them, though wary of the flames becoming more and more dangerous to them by the minute.
"What— What's going on guys?" Cole asked cautiously, stepping up to them on the ground. "We don't… understand…" Kai let go of his breath and closed his eyes. He carefully pushed Nya off of himself, knowing she wouldn't be pinning him to the ground, and helped her up as well. Kai and Nya continued to ignore them and their questioning glances. The tension and panic grew thicker and thicker. The decision had to be made, and it had to be made fast.
"You know what's going to happen now," Kai said sadly. Nya drew her breath feeling more scared and determined than ever.
"Yes, I do, and that's going to be me going down there." She stepped up to him, trying to be threatening, but Kai was unaffected. His heart ached with the truth. He gulped as he shut his eyes tightly, shaking his head.
"No, Nya, no… you do know, and you even knew before me because you tried to stop it." Kai slowly opened his eyes, barely meeting Nya's gaze. The others looked between them as Kai and Nya spoke. They had no idea what was going on, all they knew is that they all had to run for it. Suddenly, Zane gasped as he had finally finished making the calculations in his head. The others looked at him, hoping to hear an explanation, but all he gave them was a look of despair before he quietly said:
"It's either Nya's life or Kai's…"
"No…" Lloyd breathed. The tension was as thick as the smoke that made the, supposedly red sky, a dark, dark grey.
"Nya…" Kai's voice wobbled as he tried to remain as neutral as possible. He glanced at Jay and gave him a threatening look. Jay's eyes went wide as that look had only ever meant one thing from Kai to Jay: 'if anything happens to Nya…' Kai drew a breath and stepped up to her as she tried to stand taller. The tension was held for less than a second before Kai's expression broke and Nya lost focus.
"I love you," And before Nya could do anything, Kai pushed her to the side where he knew Jay would catch her, and he ran. He ran down the hill, his sobs silent, ignoring everything he saw and felt. He only had one goal, one thing to do. And that was to get to the centre as quickly as possible.
"NO!!" Nya screamed after Kai as she desperately tried to lunge for him but she continued to fall backwards. She fought the grip of whoever it was that had caught her with as much strength as she could muster, but her limbs quickly went numb from the spreading pain in her heart. She shouted for Kai to come back, she sobbed and begged for him to return.
But he was gone.
And she was being led away in the opposite direction as she felt her heart and mind being consumed by despair.
