Edward drove the teens back to their house. He didn't say anything on the way back, but (M/N) could tell he was angry. He was probably hoping that (M/N) of all people would be the one to talk Bella out of it. But then, he wasn't thinking clearly enough.

After some heavy debate between everyone, they settled on a date. Bella would become a vampire after graduation, to make it easier for Charlie and Julie.

Once they had finished school, they wouldn't be tied down anymore, and (M/N) wouldn't have to lie to their faces all the time, since he was free to leave as well. He still wasn't happy about this development, but he knew there was no chance Bella would change her mind. She was set on this since before Edward left, and now the Volturi have solidified her decision, and weakened Edward's defences for her staying human.

The longer Bella stayed human, the more danger their parents were in. (M/N) still didn't know what was going to happen to him, but in the worst case scenario, he would be off and a safe distance away from Charlie and Julie. Any problems he had would be his own, and no other human's.

Edward parked down the street and they walked until they were below Bella's window. It couldn't have been any later than 3am by this point, so they would still be in the clear. Bella held onto Edward's back first as he climbed up and gently eased her into her dark room, making sure she didn't trip on anything. Then he came back down to get (M/N). (M/N) moved forward, but stopped when Edward didn't do anything. He just stood there motionless in the moonlight for a few seconds before speaking.

"I was really counting on you to make the right choice," Edward muttered.

A flabbergasted look made its way onto (M/N)'s face, and then it quickly hardened into a scowl. "I can't believe you have the audacity to say that to me."

Edward frowned. "I'm trying to make things better, to atone for what I did. But I thought you didn't want this for her. How can you side with her?"

(M/N)'s gaze flickered towards Bella's open window, making sure she wasn't watching them, before he spoke in a hushed tone.

"What did you expect was gonna happen? I tell her no and she just gives it up and skips away?" (M/N) retorted. "I don't know what kind of fantasy you're trying to live out, but I don't see how things can stay the way they are."

"You could have reasoned her out of it. She values your opinion above all else," Edward argued.

(M/N) shook his head. "Not anymore she doesn't. She values you more, even though you don't deserve it," he hissed.

"You're right, I don't. But why wouldn't you even try?"

(M/N) scoffed. "I wanted to say no, I still say no. But she won't change her mind on this, no matter what. I can tell. If I told her no, the only thing that would do is make her feel guilty about her decision every time she looked at me. She'd feel terrible every single day. And she isn't the one who should feel guilty."

"Of course I feel guilty. There's nothing in the world I want more than to make it up to her, and you. But damning her for eternity... I don't want this for her," Edward said.

"I wasn't thinking about you when I voted. I didn't care about how you felt about the situation, and I still don't care. I was thinking about what she wants," (M/N) said, trying to keep his voice at a low volume.

"You said you weren't mad at me anymore... I don't think that's true." Edward smiled softly, as if he were comforted by that information.

It was only then that (M/N) realised how angry he did feel. The emotion had come out of nowhere, like the other times. He thought he didn't hold any animosity towards Edward anymore, but it looked like he was wrong. After facing the Volturi and watching a group of humans walk into the slaughterhouse, perhaps his mind was just a bit too preoccupied to unpack any of the feelings he held against Edward after seeing him for the first time in months.
