Robby was asleep on the couch that morning when he heard someone unlock the door and walk in. He had woken up and saw a male figure standing at the door. The sound of rattling and clanging came from the kitchen.
“Come on, get the stuff and let's get out of here.” The man said. Robby slowly rolled off the couch and quietly approached the man, slowly. “Let's go. We don't have all day.”
Robby charged at the man and lifted himself off the counter top, kicking him down to the floor. All of a sudden, Shannon had flipped the light switch on. “Oh my God, Rick. Are you Ok?” She asked. She helped him up to his feet and looked at Robby. “Robby, what is wrong with you?”
“What's wrong with me?” Robby quizzed her. “You haven't been here in days. I thought someone broke in.”
Shannon took a deep breath. She understood what the situation was. “Ok. Ok, ok. I'm sorry. I just came to grab a few things, um, ‘cause, uh, Rick is flying me to Cabo.”
“Cabo-adjacent.” The guy corrected her.
“Ok.”
“Wait. You're going to Mexico?” Robby asked.
“Uh-huh.”
“With this guy? For how long?” Robby began to stress. “I mean, we have rent to pay, and I don't have-”
Shannon stopped Robby from talking. “Don't worry about that because, Rick, you're paying this month, right?” She asked the man next to her.
“I got you, pal.” He chuckled.
Shannon continued to look through the drawers for her pills. “Oh. That's what I need.” She said, as she grabbed a bottle.
“When are you coming back?” Robby asked.
“A few days.” Shannon answered, looking at Rick for assurance.
“Um, week and a half, tops.”
“Yeah.” Shannon said, “So, you have the whole place to yourself.” She took a couple steps over to Robby. “Don't party too hard. I'll call you tomorrow, ok, sweetie?” She kissed him on the forehead. “I love you.”
Shannon had begun to walk out of the door. “Hey,” Robby spoke, stopping Rick from leaving, “you hurt her, next time you won't get up.”
“Oh!” The guy said not offended as he left the apartment.
Robby took a deep breath. He wasn't going to let his anger take control. He walked over to the drawer his mom had left open. He saw a folded piece of blue paper.
“What the hell?” He questioned as he picked it up and unfolded the paper. It was his own birth certificate.
