"Daddy, I thought I said red oak and not Jacobean? I don't think Scott's gonna be able to see that well at night."

"Not my problem." Dad smirked and continued to lay down the wood. "You like this color, so that's the stain I chose."

"What wood?" I sighed, rolling up my sleeves to help him.

"Pine."

"Wiring's all done?"

"First floor. I've got people coming in to help with the second tomorrow. If we work overtime and I can get the rest to help, I think it'll be done maybe a few weeks after you get hitched."

"Copper or PVC?"

"I don't cut corners, princess." He smirked and turned to me. "Where's the boy scout?"

"Danger Room with the new recruits. I'd join, but he likes the one on one training to ease them in... Hence why I stole his clothes yet again."

"I don't get it." Dad hummed and I raised an eyebrow. "What do you even see in that guy?"

"He's more than just 'that guy', Dad." I rolled my eyes and grabbed another plank. "We've talked about this."

"Yeah, but I don't see how he has to be the guy. You two are complete polar opposites."

"Opposites attract."

"Until they drive each other up a wall... That boy's all about rules and you don't like to be told what to do. I remember that much from raising you."

"He's more than that, Dad." I sighed. "Scott balances me out, y'know? He's the only one who's never been scared of me."

"Scared of you? Why would he be-"

"Daddy, when I was sixteen years old, I was drenched head to toe in blood that wasn't mine, murdered a good portion of those guards and almost ripped out Uncle Victor's heart... all that happened in less than an hour."

"That night wasn't on you, Lyla."

"The point is that Scott knows what I'm fully capable of and even more now with the Phoenix essence that Jean passed into me. But he's never looked at me like I'm dangerous or like a monster... He sees me for me, Dad."
