Chapter 4: The Road to Konan
The sun hung high in the sky, casting its golden rays across the bustling streets as Miaka continued her journey. The path ahead seemed endless, the cobblestone roads stretching far into the distance, but Miaka's resolve remained unwavering. She had to get to Konan—the heart of the kingdom, where answers waited, where her destiny had called her.
As she walked, the sounds of the market filled the air—vendors hawking their wares, children playing, the clinking of coins—and Miaka couldn’t help but feel out of place. She tugged at the unfamiliar uniform she wore, the fabric itchy against her skin. It was a stark contrast to the traditional attire worn by the people here, a reminder that she wasn’t from this world, that she didn’t belong. Still, she pressed on, ignoring the stares she received from the locals.
They must think I'm strange, Miaka mused, casting a glance at the passersby. Their eyes widened at her uniform, clearly puzzled. She had hoped the book would explain things better, but instead, it left her with more questions.
Trying to ignore her discomfort, Miaka approached a group of villagers who seemed to be chatting near a food stall. She took a deep breath, preparing herself to ask for directions.
"Excuse me," she began, offering a shy smile. "I’m trying to get to Konan, the capital of the kingdom. Could you please tell me the way?"
The group paused, their eyes scanning her attire before they looked at each other in silent confusion. Miaka could feel her face flush at their unspoken thoughts. She felt like an alien in this strange land, but she pushed the self-consciousness away.
One of the men, an older gentleman with a weathered face, stepped forward and cleared his throat. "Konan, you say?" His voice was deep but warm. "Ah, that’s to the south. You must follow this road. It’s a few days' walk, but there are no shortcuts."
Miaka blinked. South. I’ve been heading the wrong way. She quickly corrected herself in her mind, but the man continued.
"Be careful, though," the man said, his expression growing serious. "The road to Konan can be dangerous, especially for one so... out of place as you." He glanced at her attire again, and Miaka felt her face grow warm. But before she could respond, the man’s tone softened. "No need to worry. If you're heading that way, I’m sure you’ll find your way soon enough."
A young woman standing beside him smiled kindly at Miaka. "Why don’t you come with us for a while?" she suggested, her voice gentle. "We’re headed south and can give you a lift to the next village. It’s not far, and it’ll be safer if you don’t travel alone."
Miaka’s eyes brightened at the offer. She had been walking for hours, and the thought of traveling with kind people eased some of the anxiety she felt in this unfamiliar world.
"Thank you so much," Miaka said gratefully. "I would really appreciate that."
The group of villagers smiled warmly and beckoned her to follow them. As they walked, Miaka couldn’t help but feel a sense of relief. She still didn’t know exactly how she had gotten here, or why, but she wasn’t alone anymore.
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky with shades of pink and orange, the villagers and Miaka reached the outskirts of the next village. They offered her food and shelter for the night, but Miaka politely declined, insisting she needed to keep going toward Konan. They understood, and with warm goodbyes, they parted ways, leaving Miaka standing at the edge of the village.
With the moon now rising in the sky, Miaka set her sights on the road ahead. She was one step closer to Konan, and although she still had many questions, she was determined to keep moving forward. After all, her friends were out there somewhere—she just had to find them.
"Isuna… Yui," Miaka whispered to herself, the sound of their names offering her comfort. "I’ll find you both. I promise."
With renewed determination, she took the first step toward the south, where the capital of Konan awaited her, and with it, the answers she desperately sought.
