Chapter Forty-Two

The Midwife

Viv's POV

It's Tuesday morning I'm on my way to pick Carly up to take Charlie to the midwife, Autumn is meeting us at the hospital I'm still angry about what the midwife had said to Carly and how she made her feel, about wanting to stop breastfeeding. I was going to wear my matron uniform, but Siobhan talked me out of it, I had to agree just having me and Autumn there will be enough. So, I opted for my usual outfit black tight jeans, biker boots, blue striped shirt and leather jacket. I pulled up outside Carly's house and sent her a quick message to let her know I was outside. After a few minutes she walked out of her house with Charlie, she looked a lot happier and well rested, she got in the back with Charlie, got his car seat in "Good morning, Viv"

"Hey Carly, good morning you look great" I replied

She blushed "Erm yeah good morning"

I smiled "I'm guessing you and Chris had a lovely evening last night"

"Charlie has slept better the last couple of nights, then Chris surprised me last night when I had finished feeding, changing and settling Charlie to bed, he cooked supper, and set the living room up with scented candles, made it all cosy and we watched a film and cuddled on the couch...then we went to bed"

I smiled when she blushed again "So it was a really good night then?"

"Yeah, I hadn't wanted sex as I was so tired, but last night was great"

"Well, that's good, right come on Autumn is meeting us at the hospital"

We arrived at the hospital and saw Autumn leaning against her car, scrolling through her phone. I pulled up alongside her car "Good morning, Autumn"

"Good morning, Vivian, Good morning, Carly" she replied

She opened the car door and got Charlie out "How is my favourite little man, shall Aunty Viv and Aunty Auti go and sort the midwife out for you and your mummy"

I had never seen this side of Autumn in all the years I have known her I could see why Jamie, Luis and Courtney loved her so much. We walked along to the baby clinic Carly booked in and we sat down

"How do you want to do this?" I asked

"You take the lead; I will sit there and look scary" she replied

I laughed at her response Carly sat in between us, and she rested he head in my shoulder, she normally did this with Marjorie I looked at her surprised "Is this okay?" she asked

"Yes of course it is" I replied

I looked over at Autumn and she smiled, we sat like there for a few minutes then the midwife walked out and called "Carly Henderson"

I recognized her, she worked on A&E for a while, and I had to sack her after a medication error, she looked over as we all stood up, the look on her face said it all.

"Matron....Viv. Hi?"

"Viv is fine, hi Claire how have you been?"

"Er okay, busy you know. I didn't realize you knew Carly"

"Yes, I have known her since Jamie was 4 and going to nursery, we are close family friends, this is Autumn another family friend of Carly's" she looked over at Autumn and smiled

Autumn nodded and followed carrying Charlie through, we all sat down

"Right Carly how have things have you continued with breastfeeding Charlie?"

"No, I have been expressing breast milk adding it to formula and bottle feeding him"

"I thought we discussed this last time, and you were going to keep breastfeeding"

I looked at Autumn and placed my hand on Carly's knee "Can I just interrupt Carly told us what happened, and she didn't discuss this you lectured her, Carly told you she had been struggling and you ignored her. When I saw her at the weekend, she and her husband were tired, stressed and anxious, and Charlie had not eaten or slept properly for 3 days. I bottle fed Charlie, Carly expressed breast milk, mixed with formula and bottle fed him, and he has settled and slept. Why did you guilt her into continuing to breastfeed when she told you how she was struggling"

Claire didn't answer "You are supposed to support new mum's not make them feel guilty for not being able to breastfeed. I will be putting a complaint into your supervisor, because if you have done this to Carly how many other new mums have you done it too?"

"Come on Carly, I will weigh and check Charlie, you don't need to come back here"

I walked out holding Carly's hand then Autumn followed a few minutes later

"Well, I was all ready to speak then and I didn't need to, But I did give her a little warning though"

I smiled "What did you say?"

"I told her she needed to go and retrain and get a much better bedside manner and improve her people skills, otherwise I will be taking my bat to her car"

"AUTUMN" I laughed

"How did she react?" asked Carly

"Let's just say she agreed immediately and nodded with a very scared look on her face"

"Come on I know a great coffee shop let's get a coffee its only around the corner, plus I need to ask you both something"

We walked round, I went to order the coffees and Carly and Autumn sat down at the table, I walked over with the drinks sat down...

"Right do you two know where my honeymoon is?"

They looked at each other and started laughing
