Yamini chuckled.
Yamini : Just finishing up. What time are we meeting ? And where ?
Naina : At the pub. I'll be there by 8. Let's make it a night to remember, it's Priya's birthday, after all !
Naina's enthusiasm was contagious.
Yamini : Alright, I'll be there.
Yamini replied by pulling on a pair of heels. She grabbed her keys, her phone, and with a quick glance at her reflection in the mirror, she was out the door.
The evening air was crisp as she slid into the driver's seat of her sleek, black car. The engine roared to life as she pulled out of the parking lot, her thoughts momentarily drifting from work to the excitement of the night ahead. She hadn't had time to unwind in ages, and she was looking forward to a break from the constant pressures of the office.
The city lights blurred past as she sped through the streets. Music filled the car, her fingers tapping lightly against the wheel to the rhythm of the beat. It wasn't long before her phone buzzed again, this time with an incoming call.
...........
Yamini glanced at the screen for a split second before swiping it away, rejecting the call. Her mother always called at the most inconvenient times, and tonight, she wasn't in the mood for the usual conversation. The last thing she wanted to hear was more about her mother's concerns about her 'lack of a personal life.' It was always the same.
'I'll call her back later'she thought with a hint of irritation flickering through her. She focused her attention back on the road, the music lifting her spirits again.
Soon enough, the pub came into view, its neon lights flashing in the dark, the sounds of laughter and music spilling out onto the street. Yamini parked her car and got out, her heels clicking against the pavement as she walked towards the entrance.
Inside, the energy was electric. The pub was packed with people, laughter echoing around the room, glasses clinking, and music pulsing from the speakers. She spotted Naina almost immediately , her best friend was impossible to miss, standing near the bar with her arms raised in excitement, already laughing with Priya and a few other friends.
Yamini made her way over, a smile tugging at her lips as Naina spotted her.
Naina : There she is !
Naina exclaimed by pulling her into a quick hug.
Yamini : You made it ! Happy birthday, Priya !
Yamini said by turning to the birthday girl, who was holding a glass of champagne in one hand and flashing a wide grin.
Priya : Thanks, Yamini !
Priya laughed.
Priya : I knew you wouldn't miss it. Drinks are on me tonight !
Yamini joined her friends, the weight of the day slipping away with each passing moment. The music played louder, the laughter grew brighter, and the stress from work and family began to feel like a distant memory. She raised her glass, clinking it with Priya's and Naina's.
.............
Yamini's mother vasuki is sitting on her terrace and is staring at the moon and the stars. When Yamini was a kid she used to feed dinner to her by telling stories under the moonlight. A smile crept on her face as she recalled the happy moments she had with her daughter who least bothers about her now. She sighed and went downstairs. She glanced the childhood photo of Yamini and kissed it. She went to sleep thinking about her life.
..............
The music pulsed louder as Yamini made her way toward the bar. The crowd was thick with laughter and clinking glasses, and she could feel the energy of the pub seeping into her veins. She needed a drink, something strong to match the light buzz she was already starting to feel. Naina and the others were off in their own little world, and for a moment, Yamini wanted a little time to herself.
Priya and Naina have been her best friends since forever. She knows them since she is a kid. They are inseparable.
She slid onto one of the barstools and gave the bartender a quick smile.
Yamini : A shot of tequila, please !
She said and her voice is cutting through the noise.
The bartender nodded, swiftly pouring the shot and sliding it in front of her. Yamini didn't hesitate. She grabbed the glass, raised it to her lips, and tossed it back in one swift motion. The sharp burn of the alcohol hit her throat, followed by a faint warmth that spread through her chest. It was exactly what she needed.
Yamini : Another one !
She said and the words are slipping out before she could think.
The bartender raised an eyebrow but complied, pouring her a second shot, this time with a hint of lime. She took it without a second thought, the sharp taste lingering on her tongue.
She felt the pressure in her chest start to loosen just a little. Her shoulders relaxed. For a moment, it was as if all the noise and clutter of the world outside had faded into the background. Yamini closed her eyes for a second, the music a low hum, her heart beating a little faster than it should.
But just as the warmth from the alcohol began to settle, her phone buzzed on the counter.
She glanced down, half-expecting another work email or a reminder from her mom. Instead, it was a notification from her social media app. "Status Update". She swiped it open absentmindedly, more out of habit than anything else, when her eyes froze on the name. "Raghav".
Her ex.
'Of course' she thought with a dry laugh escaping her lips.
The status was simple, accompanied by a picture of him and a woman she didn't recognize. They were standing close together, smiling in a way that made Yamini's chest tighten. The caption was brief : "Found someone who gets me."
Her pulse quickened, irritation flaring up from somewhere deep inside.
Yamini to herself : So, he's moved on.
.............
How's the chapter ?
She broke up with raghav for good. Isn't it ?
