The soft hum of the airplane's engines created a comforting white noise as the cabin lights were dimmed for the night. The flight attendants made their rounds, offering blankets and a final check to ensure everyone was settled. Yamini had already eaten a light dinner, something quick and easy before she turned to her laptop once more, continuing to skim through notes and emails for the project in New York. But after a while, her eyelids grew heavy, and despite her best efforts to stay alert, the fatigue of the day caught up with her.
With a soft sigh, she closed her laptop, leaned back in her seat, and pulled the blanket around her shoulders, wrapping herself up against the cold air circulating through the cabin. Within moments, her breathing grew slower and deeper, her face softening into the peacefulness of sleep.
Rudransh glanced at her from the corner of his eye. She was already asleep, her head tilted slightly to one side as the quiet rhythm of her breathing filled the space between them. He watched her for a long moment, his gaze lingering on the serene curve of her face. For a brief, inexplicable second, he felt a flutter in his chest, a warmth that spread through him, as though the cool air of the airplane couldn't touch the sudden rush of heat in his veins.
'She looks so... peaceful,'he thought, his eyes softening. Yamini, the woman who was always so guarded, so driven, was now nothing more than a girl lost in sleep, unaware of the world around her.
He couldn't help it, he found himself drawn to her, to the vulnerability she wore like a cloak in her sleep. There was a tenderness to her in that moment, something fragile and beautiful that he never got to see when she was awake. He smiled faintly, his heart swelling with a strange affection.
'What would it be like to kiss her again ?'
The thought popped into his head before he could stop it. His gaze flickered to her forehead, and without thinking, his fingers almost brushed against the skin near her temple as if he could touch that moment of peace. But he stopped himself, pulling back. A part of him knew it was wrong, that it wasn't the right time or place, but the idea of pressing a soft kiss to her forehead, to give her something gentle, something caring felt almost... right.
He chuckled quietly to himself, shaking his head as if to dispel the thought. 'What the hell is wrong with me ?' he thought, trying to focus his mind on something else, anything else. But his gaze lingered a little longer on her serene face.
And then, as if on cue, Yamini shifted in her sleep. Her eyes fluttered open, just for a second. Her gaze locked onto his, and for a heartbeat, the world seemed to still. She blinked, startled, as she realized he was staring at her.
Yamini : Rudransh !
She mumbled groggily, her voice is still thick with sleep. She rubbed her eyes, trying to make sense of the situation.
Yamini : Why are you looking at me like that ?
Rudransh froze, a slight flush creeping up his neck as he quickly broke eye contact. He cleared his throat, trying to mask the awkwardness in the air.
