Recovery and the Prosecutor

Sophie lay peacefully in her hospital bed, the quiet hum of the IV machine the only sound in the VIP room. The delicate tubes provided the nutrients she needed as her body recovered from the ordeal. Her skin was pale, and her breathing was soft but steady, though the surgery on her trachea had left her unable to speak or eat. Despite her weakness, her friends and family never left her side. Ali, her fiancé sat by her bed, his gaze fixed protectively on her as she slept.

The door opened softly, and Clyde entered the room. Ali looked up, offering Clyde a weary smile. Clyde walked over to him, and they embraced briefly, sharing a moment of silent strength. Then, together, they settled onto the couch in the corner, a quiet determination hanging in the air.

Clyde broke the silence, his tone low and serious. "Ali, I wanted to update you on the trial." He leaned forward, glancing over at Sophie before continuing. "The opposition is pushing hard for an insanity plea. They're claiming he's mentally unstable, that he didn't know what he was doing."

Ali's eyes narrowed, a flash of anger darkening his face. "Mentally unstable? That's outrageous," he whispered harshly, careful not to disturb Sophie. "That psychopath knew exactly what he was doing, Clyde. Every single step was calculated—he planned it all out. And they're trying to make him look like a victim?"

Clyde sighed, nodding. "I know. Believe me, I know. But that's exactly what they're trying to convince the judge and jury of. If they succeed, he'll face a much lighter sentence—possibly a psychiatric facility instead of prison."

Ali's fists clenched, his voice tight with barely controlled anger. "So, they're just going to act like he's some helpless lunatic who didn't understand what he was doing? No. He's dangerous and perfectly sane—he had a plan, he followed it, and he tried to break Sophie. We can't let him get away with that."

Clyde put a hand on Ali's shoulder, grounding him. "I'm with you, Ali. And we've got strong evidence—thanks to the police and the private investigator you hired. The documents found in his home, the surveillance, the text messages... they all paint a picture of someone who knew exactly what he was doing."

Ali's face softened, though his resolve remained fierce. "Thank you, Clyde. For fighting for her. I know it can't be easy, but... she's got you. She's got us."

Clyde managed a small, reassuring smile. "We're going to make sure that this man faces the full weight of his crimes. I won't let him walk away, Ali. Not after what he's done to my sister."

Ali reached out, gripping Clyde's hand tightly. "Together, then. We'll see this through for Sophie."

But there's more good news. The prosecutor assigned to us, is Derek? He's one of the toughest and ruthless in the district.

Ali's eyes lit up. "Ruthless, huh? That's exactly what we need. A prosecutor who won't go easy on this psycho. Maybe we stand a real chance with him."

Derek also has a history with Patricia. They used to date."

Ali raised an eyebrow in surprise, then let out a short laugh. "Small world. So, not only do we have a hard-nosed prosecutor, but we might have his loyalty on our side too."

Clyde smiled. "Then it sounds like everything's lining up for us. Between the evidence, our investigator, and a relentless prosecutor, we're giving him no way out."

Ali gave a firm nod. "Let's make sure of it. This isn't just for Sophie—it's for everyone he's hurt. We won't let him get away."

Meanwhile at the prosecutor...

Derek sat at his desk, sifting through a mountain of files that had just landed on his desk from the higher-ups. It was the latest in a series of high-profile cases, but as he skimmed through the initial pages, one name jumped out at him: Sophie. He stopped, his eyes narrowing. Sophie? He scanned the page again, double-checking to make sure he hadn't misread. There it was—the name of the victim was indeed Sophie the same Sophie he'd known back in college.
