Verity was walking down to the cafeteria. Whitey gave them the red and black letterman jackets to wear and she was wearing hers. It even had her number on the back.

She was on her way to Bryce when a group of kids stop her. They were all dressed like they were going to a country club. Verity thought they were doing too much with that.

"Hey." A boy called out to her. He looked no older than fifteen. "Why you wearing that jacket? There's no way you're on varsity."

Verity blinked at the boy. "Excuse me?"

He repeated what he said, but slower. It was as if he was talking to a toddler. "You dating someone on it or something?"

"Not that it's any of your business, but yes." Before she could mention the part she was also on the team, the group started to laugh. "What?"

The same boy stopped abruptly. "We were laughing in relief. They actually thought that a girl was on varsity! How stupid."

Verity felt appalled. "Do you hear yourself right now?"

"Yes, I do." He started saying and looked behind her. "Hockey isn't a girls sport."

Bryce put his elbow on Verity. "These boys causing you trouble, babes?" He had his jacket slung over his shoulder.

"They were just leaving." Verity eyed the group. "Weren't you?"

The boy fixed his hair. "Yes, we were." He eyed them up and down before leaving.

Verity scoffed as her and Bryce started leaving as well. "Preppies." She rolled her eyes.

"Let's go get some food." Bryce suggested. "And get away from the annoying preppies." He motioned to the group that was just in front of them.

Trey walked in with Dj and Fred as the two best friends walked out.

-

They were sitting in a corner at Toni's, the place they've been coming to since freshman year.

They were mostly catching up with each other. Verity would normally get annoyed at the questions Bryce was asking, but she didn't.

    "You and Trey doing good?"

Verity sipped her iced tea. "Yeah." She drank more to hide her blush. "But he was butt hurt about me hanging with you instead of him."

Bryce slightly smirked. Small enough to where Verity didn't notice it. "Uh, Kataryna and Koa doing good?"

"You don't have to say her whole name you know." Verity told him. "You can call her Kat or Ryna. But they're doing good."

Bryce looked out the window to the street. "I can't imagine my dad living around here. He always seems like a true Michigander."

    "Like you?"

Bryce nodded. "When people ask where you're from, do you tell them Minneapolis or Salem?"

"Salem." Verity answered him. "Or i tell them Minnesota but moved to Massachusetts or something."

Candace came over with a guy who looked to be in his mid-to-late twenties. His skin was smooth and a light brown with his hair a black. He had cornrows and some blonde bits.

"Hey, guys." She said. "I'm training my son LJ so he'll be taking your order today."

LJ kept looking around the room when he was writing down their orders. The mother-son duo walked off and Candace looked annoyed at her son.

"I didn't know Candace had a kid." Bryce looked at them. "I think she had him young."

Verity gives him a look. "Don't just assume."

"I was 19 with no support, except from my brother Scott, when I had you, LJ. You're almost 27 with two kids and help, stop being bitchy about this." Candace was scolding.

Bryce gave a smug look and Verity rolled her eyes. "So, what color you think you're going to wear at prom? I'm thinking like navy for myself."

Verity hasn't given it any thought before. "Maybe like a dark purple? I love purple."

"You would suit purple really well, actually." Bryce commented. "But i feel like red would also go with you."

Verity and him continue their conversations and ate their food when it arrived. They went back to the school and Trey was waiting for Verity at her dorm door.

"Hey, Unions." She smiled at him, opening the door. "What you doing?"

Trey got up and walked in. "Waiting for my girlfriend to come back." He huffed and sat on her bed. "It was a long time."

"It was like an hour, Trey."

Trey shook his head. "Two hours and seven minutes to be exact."

"I'm back now." Verity said to him. "And we only had a small snack and caught up." Trey gave a look but stopped it when she looked over. "What?"

He stood up and hugged her from behind. "I just didn't expect you to be gone for so long. That's it." He kissed her cheek and let go.

"I'll watch the clock next time." Verity rolled her eyes. "Sorry."

He headed for the door. "It's fine, I'll see you later. I forgot i told Freddie and Dj I was gonna help them with something. Bye, love ya."

"Bye." Verity said as the door closed. Aneli walked in not even a second later. "Hey, Nells."

Aneli looked back into the hallway before at Verity again. "You had an argument with Trey or something?"

"He got irritated that i was out with Bryce for way 'too long' according to him." Verity laid back onto her bed.

Aneli closed the door and kicked her shoes off. "That sounds controlling. You could hang out with other people if you want. I say break up."

"Aneli, stop." Verity gave her look. "Besides it's fine, i did say i'll be back quick. So im partially at fault for this."

Aneli scoffed and sat at the end of Verity's bed. "No, he's at wrong for being an insecure little bitch that doesn't let his girlfriend hang out with a friend she's known longer than him."

"Neli, you have to be nicer to Trey." Verity glanced up. "You're mean to him for no reason, but anyways how was your day?"

Aneli clicked her tongue. "I totally think I'm either taking Justin or Keenan to prom. They both look good in pink."

"You know that prom is in May right?" Verity eyed her best friend. "That's, like, eight months away."

Aneli squealed. "I know! I'm so excited!"

"You aren't seriously planning for it right now, are you? Wait, of course you are." Verity reminded herself. "You're Aneli Chanel Moreau, the very very early planner."

Aneli jumped off the bed very suddenly. "You should let me plan your outfits for prom! We definitely need to find a color that looks good on you."

"We aren't having this conversation again."

Aneli sighed and folded her arms, studying Verity. "Hmm, I could see your hair curled. Yeah, definitely curled or crimped, I so got that."

    "Aneli, you're too early. Stop."

"You're never too early, everybody is just late." Aneli smiled. "My mama says that."
