Mu Miao's soul followed his body, trailing behind Pei Qingye, grumbling as he got into the car, keeping a safe distance.

Pei Qingye didn't mind; he simply placed the body bag containing the corpse on the seat.  Due to the length of time since death, the body had begun to stiffen.  "Mu Miao's" upper body couldn't bend, and his head bumped against the car ceiling with a thud.

Mu Miao winced at the loud sound, feeling a phantom pain in his own head.  He speculated, "Is this guy deliberately retaliating?  Does he want to desecrate my corpse?  ...What a vicious man."

With that thought, Mu Miao glared at Pei Qingye even more intensely.

Pei Qingye looked impatient, readjusting "Mu Miao's" position. Despite his SUV's spacious interior, fitting a five-foot-seven-inch boy upright proved difficult.

The driver's horrified gaze hadn't left Pei Qingye since he'd gotten in the car with the body bag.  Picking up a corpse in the middle of the night—he'd be visiting a temple to pray for blessings tomorrow.

Pei Qingye frowned, staring at "Mu Miao" for a long time before getting out of the car, placing "Mu Miao" horizontally on the back seat, taking up the entire space.

Only then did he open the passenger door and sit inside.

Mu Miao was surprised. This guy actually gave him the seat. Why?  Did he find the corpse's death aura unpleasant?

Given Pei Qingye's "achievements," Mu Miao didn't have high expectations and assumed the worst.

Pei Nuo was a pushover, but Mu Miao was not. He lifted his chin, issuing a menacing threat. "Don't sleep too soundly tonight. Keep one eye open, or I'll show you what a haunting is like!"

After getting in the car, Pei Qingye remained silent, and the driver dared not make a sound. Mu Miao's threat reached Pei Qingye's ears clearly.

"Haunting…" Pei Qingye looked at the quiet body bag through the rearview mirror, a hint of amusement flashing across his defiant face. He said to the pale-faced driver, "Do you think ghosts exist?"

Driver: "..."

With a corpse in the back seat, wasn't this conversation a bit frightening?

Pei Qingye was at the age of intense curiosity, like many teenagers, with a fervent interest in the supernatural.

He didn't believe his encounter with Mu Miao was a hallucination. Pei Qingye's sharp gaze swept the car's interior; he believed his useless brother had become a ghost, possibly nearby.

Mu Miao frowned, watching Pei Qingye fidget and look around, seemingly searching for something strange.

Mu Miao, on the other hand, sat quietly and still, behaving impeccably.  But he was thinking, When will this guy take me to be cremated?

Although he disliked Mrs. Pei, her decision to send him directly to the crematorium was excellent. Once his body turned to ashes, Mu Miao would be free.

Mu Miao could already imagine his future freedom, a sweet smile forming on his face.

A piercing scream interrupted his thoughts. Mrs. Pei opened the car door, intending to get in, but recoiled at the sight of the pale body bag.

Mrs. Pei's meticulously made-up face hardened, her angry gaze fixed on the driver. "You dared to put this unlucky thing in the car? Don't you want this job anymore?! Get it out immediately, and we'll get the car washed tomorrow."

Mu Miao felt slighted, his lips pouting. "I don't want to ride in your car."

Pei Qingye tilted his head, leaning forward from the back seat, showing no respect for his mother. "I allowed him in. If you have a problem, take another car and don't waste my time."

Mrs. Pei's face instantly fell. "Xiaoye, how can you talk to your mother like that? I carried you for ten months!"

Pei Qingye's patience was wearing thin. His lips tightened, his gaze cold.  "Yes, so after you gave birth to me, you immediately went off with your lover. I was in your way, wasn't I?"

Mu Miao put on a gossipy expression, dramatically gasping.

The driver, unexpectedly hearing this explosive family secret, wished he could bury his head in the steering wheel, hoping Mrs. Pei wouldn't notice him.

Mrs. Pei was mortified, never expecting Pei Qingye to be so disrespectful.

The maternal glow in her eyes vanished, replaced by resentment and disgust.

Pei Qingye didn't give her a chance to respond, ordering the driver, "Drive."

The driver glanced hesitantly at Mrs. Pei, whose face was red with anger.  Mrs. Pei would never share a car with a corpse and stood outside, refusing to get in.

Pei Qingye gave him a cold look, the authority of his business tycoon father unconsciously showing. "What? Is your hand broken?  Why aren't you driving?"

The driver had no choice but to start the SUV and slowly drive off.

Mu Miao turned to watch Mrs. Pei's retreating figure, then looked back at the boy in the passenger seat. In the dim car light, Pei Qingye seemed to melt into the darkness, appearing gloomier than Mu Miao, a ghost.

Mu Miao searched Pei Nuo's memories, finding no useful information, and sought help. 【001, what's the deal with Pei Qingye and his mother?】

001 quickly retrieved more detailed information about the Pei family. 【This whole family is strange. Pei's father didn't love Mrs. Pei; he loved his work. He could go years without returning home, not even calling. That's why they didn't have children early on.】

【Mrs. Pei couldn't stand the loneliness and found a lover. Pei's father found out, became furious, and forced the lover out of Yun City.  After that, they adopted Pei Nuo and later had Pei Qingye.】

【But in fact, Mrs. Pei didn't care about Pei Qingye at all. Pei Qingye was essentially raised by Pei Nuo. That's why Pei Nuo picked up Pei Qingye from evening self-study, and then he was murdered.】

Mu Miao was silent for a long time, looking at Pei Qingye's broad back. 【Then why did he bully Pei Nuo? Pei Nuo was the one who treated him best.】

001 pondered. 【Perhaps proud eagles always look down on weak sparrows, even if the sparrows raised the eagles.】

Mu Miao muttered, Pei Qingye wasn't an eagle; he was just a little wolf cub whose claws hadn't fully grown, only capable of growling to scare away its enemies.

The little wolf cub carried "Mu Miao" home and instructed the butler to buy a coffin made of ice.

The butler, nearing fifty, leaned back in fright. "Young Master, why do you need an ice coffin?"

Pei Qingye patted the body bag on his shoulder. "To put him in."

The butler's eyes went dark. He knew Pei Qingye and Mrs. Pei had gone to claim the body, but he assumed that, given Mrs. Pei's temperament, they would bring back an urn.

He never expected Pei Qingye to carry the body back. Urged by Pei Qingye, the butler had to give the order, finding an ice coffin overnight.

Mu Miao had a bad feeling when he heard about the ice coffin, waving his hands repeatedly. "I don't want an ice coffin. Just cremate me. I want fire, not ice!"

Pei Qingye couldn't hear his pleas, moving from the living room to the kitchen, then to the bathroom, and finally upstairs.

When the butler arrived with the hastily procured ice coffin, Pei Qingye had made up his mind, pointing to the second floor for the workers carrying the coffin. "Take it to my room."

Mu Miao: "..."

The butler and everyone else: "..."

Instantly, their gazes turned strangely toward Pei Qingye.

Mrs. Pei entered the house, tripping over a rug near the door, almost falling. She took off her high heels and, furious, rushed to Pei Qingye, raising her hand to strike him.

Pei Qingye grabbed her wrist. "What's gotten into you?"

"What's gotten into me?!" Mrs. Pei's chest heaved. "I want to know what's gotten into you!  Did you fall for him? Pei Qingye, are you a pervert?!"

She had completely lost her composure, nervously biting her finger. "I knew it! You never associate with any girls; you're always with that vixen, Pei Nuo.  I was right…"

"What nonsense are you talking about?" Pei Qingye was speechless.  He liked Pei Nuo? Impossible!  He felt disgusted at the sight of his useless and gloomy brother.

Like him?  Ridiculous!

Mrs. Pei shrieked, "Then why did you put his body in your room?!"

Pei Qingye calmly countered, "Should I put him in the living room? Would you like that?"

Mrs. Pei: "..."

Of course not; she wouldn't set foot in the living room.

"Bathroom, kitchen, toilet… would you like that?"

Pei Qingye asked about each location.

Mrs. Pei: "...Your room."

She still wanted the house.

Mu Miao, having heard the whole conversation, concluded, "Aha, Pei Qingye is afraid I'll dirty his house, so he's putting me in his room."

Pei Qingye led a group of people upstairs, placing the ice coffin in his room. Once everything was ready, he activated the ice coffin, and a faint mist appeared inside.

Pei Qingye took "Mu Miao" from the body bag, placed him in the ice coffin, and closed the lid.  Looking at the serene young man, who seemed to be sleeping, he murmured, "It's you, yet not you. Or did death change you?"

He no longer looked timid and downcast, daring to meet his gaze with those beautiful eyes.

Mu Miao didn't understand what he was saying.

Pei Qingye's hand rested on the cold ice coffin. "It'll be clear tomorrow."

Mu Miao didn't understand until the next morning when Pei Qingye brought a middle-aged man in a Taoist robe into the room.

The Taoist, carrying a peach wood sword, twirled his mustache, nodding and squinting meaningfully at certain spots.

He said to Pei Qingye in a drawn-out tone, "Young Master, there seems to be something unclean in this room."

If Mu Miao hadn't avoided eye contact with the Taoist the whole time, he might have believed him.
