Ch 279:
A devastated Earth, ravaged by war, epidemics, and rapid environmental decline. Some humans ventured into space to establish colonies on Mars, while those who remained on Earth dug tunnels underground.
The goal of the humans who stayed underground was to gather data to determine whether Earth's environmental damage was truly irreversible and send the data to the Mars colonies. They also researched how to use the abnormally evolved monsters on the surface and mined the resources created by these monsters. The ultimate goal was to relocate to Mars if Earth was deemed uninhabitable.
<We are compiling a list of individuals tangled in genetics.>
A person was born from the artificial life incubation device "Eve."
Rather than being cradled in the mother's arms after a difficult birth, the child was transferred by a mechanical arm of a birth-assisting drone. The child was not given a name, as the parents could not decide on one after much deliberation.
<Kang Jin-ho, born on August 21, 2171, at 15:37.>
The name "Kang Jin-ho" was randomly selected from the many pasts that made him up.
"It's been a while since we've seen a hatchling from Zone S..."
"This is my first time."
The people who lived in the desolate underground streets stopped and stared at the cradle carried by the drone.
Zone S was the only facility where genetically modified humans were created. Since the child was destined for an important military mission, the birth device had been given special attention, and it was rare for a birth to even occur safely.
Kang Jin-ho, who hatched earlier than others in the same zone, grew up in an incubator.
The average lifespan of soldiers born in Zone S was 30 years. Though their natural lifespan was short due to genetic modifications, no soldier had ever returned alive from an outdoor mission.
When Kang Jin-ho completed his final mission and died, he was 36 years old, the longest-lived soldier born in Zone S.
"Slow movements."
The youngest memory he had was of a child falling during training. The child, born with the same genetics in the same zone, resembled Kang Jin-ho so much that they were considered siblings.
Though born in the same zone, they could be called family, but since they were not born normally, they did not understand the concept of family.
"Ugh... ugh..."
The trainers who taught them always told them to suppress their emotions. They were comrades, just frontline soldiers protecting the underground humans and living the designated lives for underground society.
They were injected with language as soon as they could walk, and immediately trained with weapons.
"...Take him away."
"Yes."
In the end, the child, who cried like his age, was dragged away by the trainer. Since those born in Zone S were not easily discarded, the child would probably undergo focused training separately.
If he couldn't keep up with the training, he might be assigned to work in a production facility in another zone. Otherwise, he would be sent to the surface to serve as cannon fodder.
"Next!"
Still unaware of the situation, Kang Jin-ho stood up and grasped the sword at the trainer's command.
