The night had a strange stillness about it as I stepped into my penthouse, exhaustion pulling at me. I'd just wrapped up an intense session with my team, poring over old documents and testimonies for the 1990s case. The leads were promising, but the weight of it all sat heavy in my chest. It wasn't just a case—it was personal, and I was determined to see it through.

I tossed my jacket over the back of the couch, grabbed a glass of water from the kitchen, and sank into the chair by the balcony. The city lights glittered far below, a stark contrast to the shadows that clouded my mind. For a moment, I allowed myself to relax, to breathe.

But the moment didn't last.

My phone buzzed on the table beside me, its screen lighting up with Shayantika's name. I frowned. It was late—too late for a casual call.

"Shayantika?" I answered, immediately on edge.

"Adrian..." Her voice came through shaky, almost a whisper. That was all it took for me to sit up straight, every nerve in my body on high alert.

"What's wrong?" I asked sharply.

"I... I think someone's watching me," she said, her voice trembling.

My heart sank. "What do you mean? Did something happen?"

"There was a man," she said, her words rushing out now. "He was standing in the backyard earlier tonight. And I got a message... It said..." She paused, her breathing uneven. "It said no one could separate me from you."

Her words hit me like a punch to the gut. My grip on the phone tightened as a surge of anger and protectiveness flooded me.

"Where are you now?" I asked, keeping my voice calm for her sake.

"In my room. The doors and windows are locked."

"Good. Don't open them for anyone, not even me. Stay where you are. I'm coming."

"Adrian—" she started, but I cut her off.

"No arguments. I'll be there in twenty minutes."

I hung up and stood, grabbing my keys and slipping my gun into its holster. Whoever this man was, he was about to regret his choices.

The drive to her house was a blur, my mind racing with scenarios, each one worse than the last. By the time I reached her street, I was fully in control, my mind sharp and focused.

I was calm for one thing that I knew that she has to be safe, as there are people in her house and she is not alone.

I parked a block away and approached her house on foot, keeping to the shadows. The quiet hum of the suburban night was unnerving, and my senses were on high alert. I scanned the area, my eyes searching for anything, or anyone out of place.
