Ring, Ring, Ring...

The shrill sound of my phone broke through the peaceful morning, dragging me out of a deep sleep. Groggily, I reached over to the nightstand, fumbling to answer before it went to voicemail.

"Hello?" I mumbled, still half-asleep.

"Hi, Baccha! How are you?" My dad's familiar voice was on the other end, instantly making me sit up straighter.

"Dad! I'm fine, just woke up. How are you?" I asked, trying to shake off the remnants of sleep as I swung my legs out of bed.

"Ah, I'm doing well, beta. What are you up to?" His tone was casual, but something in it made me pause.

"I'm about to get ready for university, Dad. Why, is everything okay?" I asked, a slight frown creasing my forehead. I started to gather my things, preparing for the day, but his hesitation on the other end of the line made me stop in my tracks.

"Well...," he began, his voice softer, more serious than before, "I'm getting older, beta. I can't hold the CEO position at SA Star Enterprise much longer. I want you to take over."

His words hit me like a freight train. My hand froze mid-air, my heart skipping a beat. "Are you serious, Papa?" I asked, not quite believing what I was hearing.

"Hmm," he mumbled in affirmation, the weight of his decision clear in that single sound.

"But Dad, I haven't even finished my graduation yet," I protested, frustration creeping into my voice. This was too much to handle so early in the morning.

"I know, beta. But once you're done with your studies, please come to India and help me. I need you, Shayani," he said, his voice heavy with the weight of the years.

I sighed, running a hand through my hair, already feeling the pressure mounting. "Sure, Baba. I'll come as soon as I'm done. Take care of yourself, okay?"

"You too, beta. We'll talk soon," he said before the line went dead.

I sat there for a moment, phone still in hand, trying to wrap my mind around the idea of taking over the family business. It felt like my life was about to change in a big way, and I wasn't sure if I was ready for it.

One Month Later:

The bustling sounds of the airport surrounded me as I made my way through the terminal, the announcement of my flight to India echoing in the background. My heart was racing with a mix of excitement and anxiety. This was it—I was going back home, but not just for a visit. This time, I had a responsibility waiting for me.

Hello, Papa, I'm on my way to India! Just hopped on the plane, see you soon! I texted quickly before boarding.

His reply was almost immediate. "Come quickly, beta, we're all waiting for you."

As the plane took off, I stared out the window, watching the city below shrink until it was just a blur. Thoughts of what awaited me in India swirled in my mind—my family, my best friend Subha, and the daunting task of stepping into my father's shoes.

The flight felt both endless and too short, and before I knew it, we were landing in India. As soon as I stepped out into the arrival hall, I scanned the crowd, and there she was—Subha, my best friend, waving excitedly.

The moment I saw her, all the emotions I'd been holding back came flooding out. Tears welled up in my eyes as I shouted, "Sabbaa!!"

I dropped my bags and ran to her, enveloping her in a tight hug. The familiarity of her embrace, the scent of home, made everything feel real.

"Bi***! Why didn't you tell me you were coming? I had to hear it from Uncle!" she exclaimed, pulling back to give me an exaggerated pout.

"Arre, Papa ruined everything! I wanted to surprise you, but he let the cat out of the bag," I groaned, feeling a bit of my earlier frustration resurface.

Subha laughed, her eyes twinkling. "You're my baby, Shayani. I should know where you are and what you're up to. No surprising stuff allowed!" she teased, poking my side.

"Fine, fine. Let's go home. Papa and Mummy are waiting," I said, a smile tugging at my lips despite myself.

The car ride home was filled with chatter and laughter, Subha catching me up on all the gossip I'd missed while I was away. As we pulled up to my parents' house, a wave of nostalgia washed over me. The familiar sights and sounds of home were comforting, yet they also reminded me of the responsibilities waiting for me.

The front door burst open before I could even reach it, and there they were—Papa and Mummy, their faces lighting up with joy as they saw me.

"Shayani! Baccha!" Mummy cried, pulling me into a warm hug. Papa wasn't far behind, his strong arms wrapping around us both.

"How are you all? I missed you so much!" I exclaimed, tears pricking my eyes again.

"We're all fine, beta. It's you we've been worried about! Come, sit down. You must be tired," Papa said, guiding me to the couch.

Mummy handed me a glass of cold lemonade, the tangy sweetness instantly refreshing me. "Go to your room, freshen up, and then we'll have breakfast together," she said, her voice full of love as she patted my head.

I nodded, heading upstairs to my room. As I opened the door, I was greeted by a beautifully painted room in my favorite colors. The walls were a soothing mix of soft pastels, and right above my bed's headboard was a shelf filled with lush green plants. The sight made me smile—a little touch of nature, just the way I liked it.

After freshening up, I changed into comfortable clothes and grabbed the bags I'd brought from the airport. When I went downstairs, the table was already set, filled with all my favorite dishes. My stomach growled in response, and I couldn't help but laugh.

"Come, beta, sit for breakfast," Papa said, now dressed in his formal office attire.

I set the bags aside, leaning them against the leg of the table, and joined my family. The food was delicious, each bite tasting like home. As we finished eating, I handed out the gifts I'd brought—Baba's eyes lighting up as he saw the kurta I'd chosen for him, Mummy's delight at the silk saree, and Subha's mock annoyance as I handed her a small box with a diamond necklace inside.

"Bro, what was the need for this?" she asked, rolling her eyes, though I could see the smile tugging at the corners of her lips.

"Shut up! I got a job, earned money, so why not spoil you guys a little?" I shot back, laughing.

"Look at our beta, she's grown up so much," Baba said, his voice filled with pride.

After Papa left for the office, Subha and I settled on the couch, falling into our usual rhythm of chatting about everything and nothing. "Bro, I heard you're in love," she teased, her tone mischievous.

"The hell! Who said that?" I asked, rolling my eyes and giving her a playful shove.

She just laughed, the sound filling the room, making me feel like I was truly home.
