I sat across from them my parents .no, the people I had always believed were my parents. The room was too quiet for a day so big. My voice trembled at first, but I steadied it, asking the question that had been eating at me since I found the file.

"Why didn't you tell me I was adopted?"

They exchanged glances. My mother's hands trembled slightly in her lap.

"We never wanted to hurt you," she said softly. "We tried... so many times, but we just couldn't bring ourselves to do it."

"But it was mine to know," I whispered. "My truth."

Dad's voice broke the silence. "We couldn't have children of our own. We tried for years. And then... we went to the adoption center. It was a rainy afternoon."

My mother looked up, eyes wet. "You were four years old. Sitting near the window. You were so quiet, so... still. But when you saw us, you stood up and came running. You hugged me like you knew me. Like you'd been waiting."

My throat ached. "My name was Riya then..."

They nodded slowly. "We gave you a new name. Shayantika. A new beginning. We thought it would be better that way."

"And my real parents?" I ask, my voice barely a whisper.

"All they told us was that they died in a car accident. April 19. That's all we knew, and after the accident the villagers of the place rescued you and filed you in that adoption center" Dad answered. "No other records. No names."

I sat still for a moment. April 19. That date... I'd dreamt about it. The same dream, the same crash, again and again. It wasn't just a nightmare. It was a memory.

That's why it all made sense now ,the flashes, the voices, the woman in the mirror. She wasn't a ghost. She was guiding me.

It was the day I had to move out. Despite everything, Subha was beside me, helping me through. Despite the heartbreak, I still had Adrian in my life. I hadn't told him anything yet. Not about Riya. Not about the file. Not even the accident.

My heart was heavy, but I kept packing. I'd prepared my luggage over the past few days, but packing on this day... it felt final.

I stood at the doorway of the only home I'd ever known. My hand hovered above the doorknob. Should I say goodbye to the people who raised me? Or just walk away with the pain and the silence they left me in?

Subha placed a gentle hand on my back. I took a breath, turned around, and faced them one last time.

"Goodbye," I said softly. "Thank you... for everything."

No more words. Just the sound of the cab pulling up.

We drove through the city- the city I now knew I was born into but never knew completely.
