It was almost 10 PM.
I hadn't heard from Shayantika since she moved into the apartment. I figured she needed space. Maybe some rest. But something in me felt off like a string was pulled too tight and about to snap.
I sat on the balcony of my penthouse, staring at the dull streetlamp glow outside. The city was quieter than usual. My fingers twirled the old bracelet the one with the faint "R" charm that had always made me feel... connected.
Connected to a past I could never forget.
To Riya.
But I was starting to question everything I thought I knew.
I stood up, restless, and walked inside to the drawer in my study—the same one I had opened just days ago. The envelope still lay there, beside some faded photographs and old birthday cards.
One of the cards had scribbled writing in red marker:
"To Rian, my best friend forever. From Riya."
I read it again.
Riya.
And now Shayantika, this girl who walked into my life like a familiar breeze was unknowingly reminding me of memories I had buried deep.
The way she twirled her hair while thinking.
The way she looked up and smiled, like she knew me forever.
I leaned over the windowsill and whispered to the night air, "Are you really... her?"
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from Subha.
"We went to Silver Nest Orphan Shelter tonight. You won't believe what we found. Shayantika needs you."
My heart skipped a beat.
Silver Nest? That name... that was the same place my parents mentioned when they tried looking for Riya's records years ago but it had been shut down for a long time.
I replied quickly.
"What do you mean? What did you find??"
No reply.
Seconds stretched into minutes, minutes into a long hour. I couldn't take it anymore. I grabbed my keys, threw on my jacket, and rushed out.
Halfway down the stairs, my phone rang.
It was Shayantika.
I answered immediately. "Hey, Shayantika are you okay?"
There was silence on the line, followed by a breath. Her voice was faint but certain.
