You slept soundly in your own bed that night, your mom crashed on the couch and your boys were in their bedrooms. It was the best sleep you had got in a while, embarrassingly so, because when you got up the kids had already eaten breakfast and your mom had coffee ready.
"Morning sleeping beauty." Your mom greeted, as you walked into the small kitchen.
"Morn-" you started before the wind was knocked out of you.
"Mom, can I go play outside?" Luca asked from what felt like inside your abdomen. They never asked to go play outside in the city, (Not like you would have allowed it if they did, you did not live in a good part of town.) but you actually had a yard now, with rows of cookie cutter houses down the right side of the road and a large open field down the left, it was a lot safer.
"Sure bug." You huffed out, smiling when he ran around you. "...morning." you tried greeting again with a small laugh.
"You raised some good boys there." Your mom praised as she passed you coffee that you knew was going to be too strong, because that's how she made it, but you took it anyway.
"Hang on, don't say 'raised' they're not done cooking yet." You shot back with a laugh, before a scream had you abandoning your coffee and running outside, taking in the scene quickly. The neighbors across the road had bought a new horse a few days ago, you had seen it out in the field with Desperado. The long red ribbon on its tail tickling something in the back of your mind, you couldn't remember what the red ribbon meant, but your mom always made sure that there was a wide gap between you and those horses.
So the fact that the large black stallion was loose and on a runaway course straight for your son while Outlaw and Desperado chased after it didn't bode well, especially as Luca stood there frozen. Your legs moved before your brain was done taking everything in, because mothers do what mothers have to, you curled your entire body around his, positioning yourself between him and the runaway horse waiting for the sickening crunch of hooves against bone, but it never came because mothers do what mothers have to and you weren't the only mother there.
"Whoa there! Whoa! Easy boy!" Your mom's voice had you peeking over your shoulder, She had the horse's reins, barely staying out of range as it bared its teeth with its ears flat against its head, guiding it down away from you and your son. You jumped up, your legs burning as you lifted Luca, keeping him curled against your chest and headed back inside, catching Asher as he was on his way out,
"Nope, bud, need you in here a sec." You said, redirecting him back into the living room. You sank down on the floor trying to pay attention to Asher's questions while looking over every inch of Luca's body for any signs that he was hurt, but it became increasingly obvious that he was just scared.
"It's alright guys, it's okay, he just got a little scared." You soothed, pushing down the fear pounding in your ears, "Asher, buddy, can you do me a huge favor and sit with him, maybe turn on the TV?" You asked, sitting Luca down on the couch while he sniffled. "Will you be alright with your big brother, baby? I need to go outside and check on mamaw."
You waited for him to nod, scooting closer to Asher. Your older boy, sweet as he was, hugged Luca around the shoulders, pulling him closer while he looked through the kids shows that were on TV. You jumped into a pair of shoes ready to go out and tare your neighbors a new one for being so reckless with a horse that they should have known to be more careful with, until you saw it.
Their fence was shredded, like someone had gone through with wire cutters and clipped every single wire between every post. Up in the field the horse usually grazed in there was something black spelling out the words 'go back' but you couldn't tell if it was spray paint, burned, or something else. Tex and Ranger were already up in the field trying to get the bad grass out so that the animals wouldn't eat it, while your mom looked like she was about to fight Outlaw and Desperado.
