The click of your heels on the sidewalk was weirdly comforting. The idea of feeling comfortable enough with your kids being taken care of, that you could go out was new to you. The bar scene was not.
You knew you wanted to avoid loud or full nightclubs, you passed up the places that had long lines, the places that looked like biker bars, and just the skeezy dive bars. None of them were the vibe you were looking for; you didn't want to dance, you didn't want to feel overdressed, and you didn't want to get mugged either.
Walking casually through the bar district, you noticed another street of bars that you could look at without going in, like window shopping for an experience. You went to make your way down a small side street when a well-dressed woman stopped you.
"Oh, honey! No, you don't want to go down that way, it's the Monster side of downtown, you know?" She asked conspiratorially, and you turned to face her fully. You think you recognized her. Her makeup was done up bolder than you had ever seen it, with bright blue eyeshadow and red lipstick, but you were sure that she was one of Asher's teachers. (The only one you had met in person, the bitch)
"I didn't know that, but thank you so much." You replied, gritting your teeth and trying not to say anything that would get Asher singled out, despite the fact that you wanted to tell her that your son could wear eyeliner if he wanted or have friends that weren't the same species as him if he wanted to, but instead you smiled a beaming smile and added, "I'll be sure to stop by an ATM and exchange some of my bills for G, so I can leave a good tip. Thanks again!"
You turned as she started to gape at you like a fish and hurried down the side street, popping out back onto a well populated street. There were definitely more monsters on this side, but there were still quite a few humans going in and out of buildings.
Why are people like her so confident when they spew garbage like that? You wondered, looking at all the other humans obviously enjoying this side of downtown.
"Monsters don't usually take tips. The spider bars probably won't turn you down, but they all take dollars now." A voice from your left had you jumping, your conversation with Asher's teacher must have echoed down the side street and drew the attention of...a skeleton?
Not one of the ones you knew, you probably would have remembered them. They were in a black little crop top showing off most of their spine, a little purple jacket with bright electric blue fluff that matched blue heeled boots on over tight black leather pants that showed off curves he shouldn't have had. If you met, you definitely would have remembered him, but he wasn't familiar at all.
The way he was leaning back against the wall with the pail smoke of a Virginia slim curling around his phalanges was very familiar though.
"That's okay, I honestly don't even know if an ATM can convert dollars to G, even then, the conversion rates are insane, and I probably wouldn't get much." You admitted.
"Oh, you sound fun." He teased and you weren't really sure what he meant, you didn't think that anything you said sounded 'fun' until he continued, and you had a feeling you knew exactly what he was doing. "Do you maybe want some company tonight babe?"
"Would that company cost me anything?" You asked, thinking you already knew the answer when he smirked at you and quirked his hip toward you moving into your space slightly.
"Maybe, how much do you have on you?" He replied, flirting lightly.
"Oh, you're too pretty to sell yourself that short sweetheart." You replied, putting a flirty inflection of your own into your voice, thinking that that would be that, until you heard a familiar voice.
