Kayax Adler
"Mama, this had to be expensive! Why'd you buy this for me? I mean, I freakin' love it, but..."
Mama put her hand on top of my head, leaning down to get at eye level with me as she wiggled and scrunched her nose. "Sweet baby, I bought it for both of us, but I want you to put it in your collection. I know you'll take care of it."
I frowned. "I'll guard it with my life, but..."
"No buts, my baby. Go put it with the rest of your collection; I plan to be invited into your room for yet another tour of your entire collection. You happen to be my most favorite tour guide."
My smile was back as I hopped in the air with excitement. "Can I?! Aren't you tired of hearing about everything?"
She shook her head, wiping her hand down her apron. "Never in a million years. Your interest became my interest, and it's okay to hear your knowledge whenever you want to share it. You're teaching me."
"I'm only ten!" I complained. "You teach me, Mama."
She angled her chin toward my bedroom door. "Go put it up, okay? Dinner is almost ready. We're having your favorite."
"Oh! Did you make baked mac' n' cheese?!"
"And blueberry crumble."
I screamed my excitement as I rushed off to my room. I loved my birthdays, and this year, I loved it the most. I clutched the album in my hands, keeping a firm grasp on either side with the biggest smile on my face.
"Elijah, you are my hero! Mama loves you, too." I carefully set the signed album on the metal holder I knew Mama put up for me. I didn't even realize it was there. Then I jumped around with excitement. "I finally have a signed album!" I put my hands on top of the desk I kept all my favorite and most special Elijah Luna collection items on. "I'll take care of you, I promise. One day, I will be a singer just like you. I want to tell stories through my music, and one day, I hope you come out of hiding. I'll get famous enough one day so we can sing together. I still have that song I wrote for us!"
I stood there, remembering every small moment that I spent obsessing over my hero. Mama told me it wasn't an obsession and that I looked up to him. She wasn't wrong; I still looked up to him. I could still remember the first and only time I'd ever been face-to-face with him, and I couldn't even breathe long enough before I had to remember I was putting on a show.
It was the day I met August, and Elijah walked in to confirm August wasn't lying about his identity. He almost... defended me. Almost. But he didn't look at me, and I still held that day closer to my heart than I should.
Little Kayax was so full of dreams and ambitions, and yeah, I'd reached the dreams Little Kayax wanted me to achieve, but he'd be so fucking disappointed in me. Sure, Little Kayax had no idea that we'd find out the bane of our existence turned out to be my Father, but... it wasn't Mama who forced me to become a fan.
I'd discovered Elijah all on my own.
I was home sick one day when I was seven, and... they played a music video, "My Red Tulip," and I was instantly blown away. Mama would never take away something I enjoyed from me, even if I knew she felt uneasy about the truth of my Father's identity.
From then on, Mama helped me by pulling up every single Elijah Luna song there was available. There was never a time we weren't watching his music videos or even interviews he'd done. I'd learned about Lennox Luna that way. Even Landon Luna. And that was also how I found out about Davis fucking Adler.
