I was vastly protective, and my Mama showed me what it meant to be as such. And see, what I didn't appreciate was the moment I heard a rather loud, grating fucking voice put August's name on his tongue. No, no. We weren't okay with that at all.
However, as I stormed toward the stairwell where I heard that peasant, I heard another voice that sounded familiar. Hm. Still, I wasn't letting it go—not for even a second—because that insult was one I used, and I never believed it.
I slammed my hands onto the door, throwing it open as my eyes lit on fire--aimed at the rodent who dared to speak his name in such a manner. I threw my finger out as I charged toward him. "What the fuck did you just say about my husband, you poster boy for daddy issues?" I stopped in front of the culprit. His eyes widened as he stepped back. "Don't you ever let me hear you speak his name the way you just did again! Because if I get my hands on you, I'm like a dog with lockjaw. I won't let go until my prey is taken care of. Do I make myself perfectly clear?!"
The kid with the bad, uneven haircut turned his nose up at me with the curl of his lip. "Everyone thinks they can throw their money around and get what they want. Or, they throw their name around, and everyone drops to their knees. Now, I'm stuck here, and I don't deserve to be." He turned his head, and I finally realized who else was standing there. And he dared speak to my family that way? "You get everything you want because you enjoy it. That never meant the world would enjoy me because you did, Valentine. I thought I made it, but as it turns out, it was just another person who got what they wanted. Stay away from me."
I eyed Valen. His face was blank with emotions when I'd only ever seen puppy-like smiles on his face... mostly. He blinked once. Twice. "Your music may not be a mistake, but your personality sure is. I don't find that I want someone around me who sees an act of kindness as a threat. You can show yourself the door. We wouldn't want my nepotistic fingers on you, now, would we?"
Oh, ho. I loved this one.
And now I knew exactly who that boy was, and I started to wonder how the fuck this even happened. Vesper Quinn, and wow, he needed a haircut. I rather hoped he adapted a stylist in that little contract of his. Now, color me confused because Valen really, and I mean really liked that boy. Sometimes, I wondered if they had some secret fling that fell flat.
Because Vesper Quinn was still staring at Valen as if it was almost hard for him to leave. How interesting, wasn't it? Ah, that was okay. Because sometimes, we all have to wear masks. However, I truly believed that Vesper Quinn meant that comment about August using his nepotism. But maybe there was more to it than that. It wasn't my business.
Valen had now shut down every single ounce of joy he once held on his face when it came to Vesper Quinn.
Since Vesper wasn't walking out of the room like his words seemed to promise, Valen took the intuitive and left himself. Now, I was toe-to-toe with the alien who dared speak about August the way he did. And sure, I'd said worse, but he was serious about his comment.
"I don't know what the fuck your problem is," I growled as he looked at me, pushing his dark hair out of his face. God, get a fucking haircut. "But you are an ungrateful little runt. Valen was your biggest fan, and look at that! You lost him now. Congratulations on ruining something good in your life. And I'll tell you something right now. Valen might have given your name to someone here, but you still had to prove you deserved to fucking be here. You signed because they decided. Not because Valen gave you a golden ticket. August had to do the exact same thing. So, whatever you're hiding deep down inside of you--I hope you extract it."
