Author's note: I just wanted to forewarn you that this chapter will contain a lot of names, but you don't need to remember them all. Kayax was close to everyone in his hometown, so I had to randomly name everyone. The only names that are important to remember are Gramps, Harper, and Sadie, but you've already been introduced to her name prior to this chapter. I hope you enjoy!

Kayax Adler

Oh, my god, it was so fucking cold.

However, I was still standing in the back of the rest area we stopped at, doing little jumps to keep the blood pumping through my body. Brutus was leaning against the back of the SUV, doing something on his phone. We were waiting for August. I'd already gotten a text from him saying he landed, but we were still waiting for him to get here.

We were only a couple of hours away from my hometown, and I couldn't even describe the feeling I had when I stepped back into the air of North Carolina again. It made my heart crackle, and my nerves were eating me alive. There was too much anticipation flowing through me now. What were people going to think? I had no idea, but August was right. They did love me, and that didn't just stop.

I only worried that they were upset with me because of my actions. I caused people a lot of hurt, and I even caused the Luna family distress--even if all I wanted was for them to be safe from the horrors my father tried to enact.

"I'm worried you're about to explode. Why are you jumping?"

"Keeps the blood flowing, Brutus. I need all that warmth so I can gear up to be home again."

"And see your lovely boyfriend, yes?"

I groaned as my feet stayed on the ground now, and I glared at my security guard. "Listen, he hasn't told me what we are, but I mean, I think he's my boyfriend. I've tried to slip it into our conversation twice now, but he didn't mention it because he focused on the actual issue I was having rather than my confusion about our title. How dare he care about me. So rude, honestly."

Brutus pocketed his phone, rolling his eyes. "Yes, how dare he give you happiness and everything you've ever wanted? I'm appalled. Kayax, stop jumping. I'm afraid you're about to shoot off the ground like a firework. Then I'd have to be the one to search for where you landed, and I don't want to do that."

I shook my head as I kept jumping. "Nope, need to keep that warmth all wrapped up. And the-- oh! Is that him? Brutus, is that him?" I pointed toward the car driving through the area a short distance away. "I think that could be him, right? Brutus! Is that him?!"

"You are going to be the cause of my miserable death. How am I supposed to know if that's him or not if you don't know? You know more than I do."

"Oh, it is! It's him! Ah, look at him. See him? That's my... August. Isn't he so tall and precious? All, mine, too! Did you know that?"

"Nope, I had no idea. But yeah, let's dismiss the fact that your boyfriend flew across the country to be there for you, but you claim to have no idea what your title is. But I don't think someone who wasn't your boyfriend would do something like that. So, I'm going to safely assume as such."

I barely paid attention to his words as August started in our direction as the car drove away. I swore I lit up like a Christmas tree. Sue me, okay? I haven't had a boyfriend that made me feel this way merely by seeing their face. But when I saw August, I felt more than happy. I was excited. And it had been a long thirteen hours since I'd last seen him.
