Long Chapter Warning: 5,125 words.
Kayax Adler
"Keep your superstar mouth shut. We have someone coming in here shortly."
I glared at Brutus. "I'm having a crisis."
Brutus rolled his eyes as he slapped a binder on my desk. "Find a business manager, Kayax. I will handle the little details as you ask questions. Try and write notes."
Looking over the script Brutus brought me, I blinked as if it grew legs. "Uhm, what the fuck does discrepancies mean?"
"Kind of like an error. Don't worry about it. If you can pronounce it, you're fine. You don't need to fully understand. You're not stupid, Kayax."
I grabbed my pen, mocking his words before saying. "I happen to believe differently, but be your best self, Brutus. And always shower me with compliments. I'm a whore for compliments."
"Stop your yammering because I have it on good authority that you were afraid to go and see August."
"I literally goaded Lennox Luna. I have to assume he's pretty pissed off at me right now, if not for the foreseeable future." I scanned the document. "What the hell is a lucrative endorsement?"
Brutus groaned as if I was disrupting his life balance. Hehe. I probably was; let us be honest with ourselves. "Quiet, and pull out his resume. His name is Justice Kennedy--"
"Someone's parents love politics a little too much. I mean, Justice Kennedy? Literally named him after a president in the name of justice. How--"
"Sh."
I clamped my mouth shut as a younger-looking male walked into the room, and I did everything I could to resist the urge to curl my lip. Nope, I didn't like the ego he wore in the form of a smirk. Who fucking smirked when walking into a job interview? It gave off cocky energy. I didn't like that. Reminded me of Davis.
Immediately no.
Still, I stood up and shook his hand with a tight smile. When I let go, I stayed on my feet, inviting him to sit with the flick of my hand. "Thank you for being here." That was on the script. I didn't care if he was here or not. "I'll assume you know who I am if you're sitting here. We--"
Justice angled his head, looking a little confused. Aw, poor little fella. Goddamn it, I missed Salem. I picked up a mannerism or two from him. "I'm sorry; I thought the man behind you would be conducting the interview. Why are you doing it?"
"The first thing you're going to do is question how things are operating? That's the route you chose?"
He truly believed he was untouchable. Maybe he had a powerful fam-- "My Father guaranteed me this job, I already know I'm here for appearances."
Ah, look at that! I guessed correctly.
I snorted a laugh before I put my evilest smirk on my lips. I leaned over my desk, pressing my palms against the wood--splaying out my fingers. "Hey, sweetheart, over here." He was playing my game, and I was more than happy to knock him off the fucking chessboard. He met my gaze, and I could see the smugness in his expression. He thought he was high and mighty. Oh, no, no. That wasn't going to work for me. "What makes you think I give a rat's ass who your father is? Hm? I've never heard of him, but it appears you've heard of me. Do you know what tells me? Go on, I'll let you guess."
His eyes narrowed as he analyzed me. "You--"
"Op, out of time." My smirk grew. "It tells me that you aren't anywhere as important as you seem to think you are. This is my company, Justice." I said his name as if it were a curse. "I own this. So, whatever you think your Daddy can bribe me with, I can guarantee that I can do more than one up him. I make the choices, not your Daddy and his pocket change. Are we clear?" Hehe, he paled completely. Yay, I loved playing the bad guy against villains. I only wished I didn't have to play the villain against the heroes. "Get out of my office before Brutus gets ahold of you. He's not gentle."
