Chapter 93: Peninsula Project Arc
Jeongyeon entered the room to find Nayeon in a distressed state, worn out from hours of questioning. Jeongyeon quickly approached her, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. Opening her eyes, Nayeon held Jeongyeon's hand tightly and gave her a calm but urgent set of instructions. Jeongyeon tried her best to be distracted by the slight affection Nayeon was giving.
Nayeon was torn between shielding Jeongyeon from harm and needing her support. Jeongyeon gave her assurance that she could rely on her. Nayeon instructed Jeongyeon to go to her house, where she would find a hidden latch behind the right side of her bedroom bookcase. This latch would reveal a secret room, one Jeongyeon already knew about but kept secret (Chapter 31). Inside the room, Nayeon explained, there was a drawer, and in the third drawer, Jeongyeon would find a card needed to access a bank vault.
At the vault, Jeongyeon would need to show the card and give a specific passcode Nayeon provided, which would grant her access. Inside, she had to retrieve a specific envelope and make sure it stayed safe.
Jeongyeon left Nayeon without asking any questions, understanding that Nayeon had already faced hours of interrogation. When she arrived at Nayeon's house, she was shocked to find it in shambles, as if someone had broken in and ransacked the place. Carefully searching for any signs of intruders, she found no one there but noticed the mess indicated someone had been searching for something.
Following Nayeon's instructions, Jeongyeon went to the bedroom, relieved to find the hidden room still intact. She retrieved the envelope from the vault, making sure to glance at the surveillance camera before leaving. Jeongyeon examined the envelope, realizing by its weight and shape that it likely contained a hard drive and not paper documents. She frowned and puzzled about why Nayeon was so determined to protect it.
Jeongyeon only knew that whatever was on the drive was crucial and needed safeguarding. Therefore, she devised a plan. She bought identical envelopes and distributed decoys in various locations across Seoul, including her home, office, and other random secure spots. She placed the genuine envelope with a trusted old neighbor who owned a local convenience store, while keeping a fake one with her as a precaution.
Chapter 94:
The situation for Nayeon was becoming increasingly serious. She had been detained for three days, and her lawyer had just informed Jeongyeon that the defense was weak, with no solid evidence to support Nayeon's claims. The investigation still found no trace of the construction company she had switched to, and Mr. Wong's alibi was airtight, stating he had been in China for three years, with no connection to Nayeon. It was becoming more likely that Nayeon couldn't escape the allegations.
The media had already sensationalized Nayeon's case, further complicating her situation. The public was furious over the building collapse, which caused major injuries but no deaths. The Im Group and Nayeon's father (Im Hwan) were also dragged into the scandal, and there was growing pressure for answers. The case had escalated far beyond her control, and it seemed impossible to escape.
Nayeon knew the Chairman would eventually try to strike a deal, using the case as leverage. Sure enough, Chou Tzuyu appeared, looking worn out. She offered a deal, exchange the hard drive for her release. The Chairman had clearly set up a scapegoat. Nayeon, however, was disgusted by the idea of being used as a pawn. She smirked and declined the offer.
As Tzuyu left with a dull eyes, Jeongyeon entered, bringing food with her. Nayeon felt an uneasy tension and immediately grabbed Jeongyeon's wrist, her grip tight as she asked her to promise that she would never hand over the envelope no matter what offer or deal she might receive from anyone. Jeongyeon had already heard about Tzuyu's offer, she understood the stakes involved but if they didn't comply with the Chairman's demands, Nayeon would face court trial where it was definite she would lose.
