Chapter 110:
The Chairman was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment, but after suffering a stroke, he was confined to a hospital instead. The Son Group faced significant losses following the scandal, which further tarnished their reputation.
Similarly, the Hirai Family and the Im Group faced severe repercussions. Although the current CEOs were not directly involved in the Peninsular Project, they were still held accountable. Both companies were ordered to pay fines and compensate the victims, leading to major financial setbacks and a damaged public image.
Jeongyeon stepped forward and took charge. She succeeded the Son Group and made a public statement, promising to ensure all victims were properly compensated. As the new CEO, she decided to restructure the company into a half-charity model. She rebranded the company to shed its old identity. The company was renamed HavenCorp, symbolizing a fresh start and a commitment to positive change.
HavenCorp would no longer dominate the retail, beauty and fashion industries. Instead, the company would focus on creating sustainable solutions and supporting underserved communities. With a strong emphasis on social responsibility, Jeongyeon allocated a significant portion of the company's profits to fund charitable initiatives aimed at education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation. While the company would still produce and sell products, a large percentage of revenue would go to fund social projects. Jeongyeon envisioned a company that would not only drive economic growth but also leave a positive impact on society.
The public had mixed reactions. Some criticized the move as a desperate attempt to save the company's reputation, calling Jeongyeon and the board hypocrites. They felt no amount of rebranding could erase the past wrongdoings, seeing the charitable shift as insincere.
However, many believed in Jeongyeon. She had always been known for her integrity, and supporters admired her decision to take charge of a company once linked to corruption. They trusted her to lead HavenCorp in a positive direction and make real change.
Chapter 111:
Chaeyoung attended her final trial in court, her hands clenched in her lap. Jeongyeon and Nayeon sat quietly on the bench, both anxiously awaiting the verdict. The courtroom was tense. Chaeyoung kept her gaze forward.
The court sentenced Son Chaeyoung to 9 years in prison for her role in causing the bankruptcy of a small company and illegally acquiring its assets. However, because she was a first-time offender, cooperated fully with the authorities, and provided important evidence, she became eligible for parole after serving 4 years, depending on her behavior and rehabilitation. Chaeyoung was ordered to pay restitution to the victims of her actions, with a payment plan to be decided later. If released on parole, Chaeyoung would be placed on probation for 2 years, during which time she had to adhere to the conditions set by the parole board. In addition, Chaeyoung was required to complete 200 hours of community service.
Chaeyoung glanced at the bench where Jeongyeon, Nayeon, Dahyun, and the Hirai Family had attended her court hearing. She gave a small, reassuring smile as the officer tugged her to leave the court. Cuffed and escorted by two police officers, she walked down the hallway. At the end of the hall, Nayeon waited for her, and as the officers moved away, Chaeyoung noticed Jeongyeon standing nearby, speaking to them. She suspected Jeongyeon had bribed them.
Nayeon immediately pulled Chaeyoung into a tight embrace, asking if she was scared. Chaeyoung nodded slightly. Jeongyeon approached them and calmly told Chaeyoung that she would be waiting for her and would hand over control of HavenCorp once she was released. The company belonged to Chaeyoung, with Jeongyeon merely managing it in her absence.
Chaeyoung shook her head, refusing the offer.
She didn't want to be associated with the company or its legacy, even though it had been rebranded. Nayeon gently wrapped her scarf around Chaeyoung's neck, her voice soft as she told her to take care of her health and assuring her they would visit regularly. However, Chaeyoung refused. She didn't want them to visit, as it would only make her feel more miserable. The truth was, she didn't want them to be associated with a criminal.Chaeyoung boarded the bus and took her seat as it drove to the prison where she would be allocated. She leaned her head against the window, watching as the city blurred and receded into the distance. Her gaze shifted to the wedding ring on her finger.
"You deserve so much better. A better past, a better future, a better person. The only beautiful thing that happened to me my whole life was you."
"At first, I thought heavens send you to me as a gift, and I thanked the stars for blessing me with someone like you by my side. But then I realized, you aren't a gift, you are a punishment. I'm being punished."
"But, Mina would you blame me for being selfish? That, even though it was pain, at least I was something to you?"
The thought lingered, unanswered.
-The End-
A/N:
Hello, Haru here,
It reminds me of Withered. I know there may be a lot of dissatisfaction with the ending, but honestly, I think it wraps up well. Chaeyoung and Mina start off on the wrong foot. Everything was planned and manipulated, and they both have to start over. Chaeyoung's decision to hand herself in represents her biggest character development. The book focuses on her struggle and how she transformed into a better person. The chairman's plan backfired because Mina wasn't Chaeyoung's weakness after all, instead, she gave Chaeyoung the courage to break free from his control.
I mentioned that this book would be very long and might need a sequel (before I discontinued it). If we follow my outline, book 1 ends here. If you, readers, are still interested in learning more about their story, let me know, and I'll continue the summary (I know reading summary is boring) I still have the outline for book 2, which focuses on Chaeyoung's self-improvement, acceptance, and rebuilding her relationship.
If not, we'll have to say goodbye here.
Thank you for reading.
