Chapter 108: The Last Arc
The envelope sat on the dining table, plain and unmarked except for Mina's name scrawled across the front. She frowned as she picked it up, her curiosity piqued. There was no sender, no return address—nothing to hint at its origins. There was an initial at the bottom of the envelope but she didn't know what it meant.
Mina opened it carefully, unfolding the document inside. Her eyes skimmed the first few lines, her frown deepening as the words sank in. It detailed a project from years ago—one under Son Chaeyoung, General Manager at the time. The words described how a small shoe company had been carefully targeted and led to financial ruin under an elaborate scheme, only for its assets and rights to be bought out at a fraction of their value.
Her heart skipped a beat when she recognized the name of the company. It was her family's.
Mina's hands trembled slightly as she read on, her chest tightening with every word. The document painted a clear picture of greed, and calculated destruction. Her mind reeled. Who could have sent this? She shook her head, letting out a shaky laugh as she tossed the paper onto the table. It had to be fake. Some cruel prank. There was no evidence, no source, just printed words of accusations.
When Chaeyoung's voice called out from behind her, Mina nearly jumped. "What's that?" Chaeyoung asked casually, walking toward her.
"Nothing," Mina replied, trying to keep her voice steady. "Someone sent me this... ridiculous letter. It's a prank maybe from your competitor." She picked up the document and handed it to Chaeyoung without much thought.
Chaeyoung took the paper, her expression relaxed until she saw the words. Her body went rigid, her eyes darting across the page as her breath hitched. She had planned to tell Mina the truth today but the Chairman was faster. Chaeyoung recognised the initial. He found them after all but couldn't do anything since the hard drives was not longer in his possession.
"Chaeyoung?" Mina called softly, her smile fading as she noticed the sudden tension in her wife's demeanor. Chaeyoung didn't answer. Her fingers tightened around the paper as her face drained of color. Mina's stomach dropped. "Chaeyoung..." she whispered, "Tell me it's not true."
Chaeyoung slowly lowered the paper, her lips parting, but no words came out. Mina's heart sank further with each passing second of silence, "Deny it, please,"
"Mina..." Chaeyoung's voice cracked as she spoke.
Mina looked up at her, tears welling in her eyes. Her voice was soft, almost a whisper. "Is it true?"
Chaeyoung opened her mouth but couldn't find the words. She wanted to deny it, to say it wasn't what Mina thought—but she couldn't. She could only nod. Mina's lips quivered, and her grip on the document loosened until it fluttered to the floor. She didn't cry. She didn't scream. She just sat there, staring at Chaeyoung as if she were seeing a stranger.
"I..." Chaeyoung's voice broke, and she looked away. "I didn't know it was your family's company at first. I swear I didn't." Her knees felt weak as she forced herself to continue. "By the time I realized... it was too late. I didn't know how to fix it. I was scared, I was stupid and I... I made a mistake. A horrible mistake."
Mina pressed a hand to her chest, as if trying to steady her racing heart. Her tears fell silently as she stared at Chaeyoung, hoping—praying—that she'd take it back. That she'd say it was all a misunderstanding. But no such words came. She wasn't angry—not yet. She was hurt. So deeply hurt that she couldn't even process it
Chaeyoung took a shaky step forward, her voice desperate. "Mina, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean for it to happen this way,"
Mina stayed rooted in place, her body trembling. She couldn't scream or yell. She couldn't find the strength to lash out. All she could do was stare at Chaeyoung, her heart breaking into pieces.
