Nesrin stood before Faolan and Ettrian. Her classes had been easy enough as they had nothing serious to do about them. Em would remain untouched and as long as she didn't have to use her abilities, she could forget about them.
Now she trained. Training meant actually utilising Em and well, that was no longer an option.
"I can't do it," she was getting used to the sound of her voice.
"You have to," Ettrian said, sternly.
This had been going on for days. It would be group training time and the others would pair off leaving her with Ettrian and Faolan. She couldn't (wouldn't) use her powers on either one. Maybe on some of the jerks who taunt her for being a girl, but not Faolan or Ettrian. She liked them both.
"Hit me," Ettrian said.
"No."
"Hit me."
"No, magic is gentle. It mustn't be used for battle."
"HIT ME!" Ettrian lashed out with an energy whip.
"NO!" Nesrin dodged, before striking out herself. Ettrian couldn't dodge.
She realised what she was doing and pulled her magic back in. He smirked.
"I knew you could do it," he said.
"I was afraid of the lengths you would go to," Nesrin said, before storming out.
In her room, she collapsed on the floor beside her bed. She never understood men. They were cruel. No wonder Em didn't want to come out here. They would use it for the wrong things. To fight battles unnecessary for humans to fight.
Humans were cruel, she corrected. Women could be just as bad as men. Sometimes worse.
That was the truth. And the truth often hurt.
She heard a quiet knock on the door. She didn't answer when Nadine's voice called from beyond. She didn't move when the door cracked open a bit. She pretended nobody could see her and nobody did. She was eventually left to ponder. She was eventually left to her sorrow.
Hours later, Nesrin decided to venture out of her room. The hallways were empty but light enough.
Everyone must be at dinner, she thought.
She walked to the dining hall and sure enough most of the students were there. She sat on the outskirts of the hall. Hoping no one would notice her.
No one did.
Once Nesrin had finished her meal, she was approached by Ettrian.
"Nesrin, please follow me," his voice barely above a whisper.
She followed as he led her to an area she wasn't permitted in alone.
