He could hear them. The voices of the men above them. He hoped Nesrin couldn't. They were saying horrible things.
"And you are sure that they are ready for this?"
"I know for a fact that they aren't. Faolan is a fighter, but he is also so much more. The girl needs to know his secret. Which is why this must be done under the full moon. We also need to understand how far her power goes. We must push her past the limit and see if she can take out the zoslte," one of the older scholar's said.
"And if they can't?" a skittish young man asked.
"Then they'll die and we will know that the prophecy isn't about her. We will then keep searching for the Newhildey Oowalstir," Ettrian said. Faolan could recognize his voice. From now on he would always be able to recognize his mentor's voice.
"The Newhildey Oowalstir?" another young scholar asked. This one had a gruff voice, as if it had been scarred.
"The title means One Who Will Destroy."
"What will she destroy?" Skit asked. Skit for how skittish he sounded.
"Our world," Faolan's eyes widened. If what they were saying was true, Nesrin had the ability to destroy the planet.
One the zoslte lashed out at him, waking him from his daze that was listening to the men above him. Faolan dodged, but not before a sharp pain hit his side. At first he thought he wasn't fast enough at dodging the attack. Then he remembered the moon was full.
Pain ripped through him. His back bent to fit the wolf. His legs grew shorter and black fur sprouted all along his body.
He heard Nesrin scream. He couldn't tell if it was because a werewolf was transforming right before her eyes or because of the zoslte that were likely attacking her. He couldn't tell, the pain was too blinding.
Another sharp blast of pain ripped through him as ears sprouted on top of his head. He maybe had a few more moments before the final sharp pain of his mind becoming a wolf's.
He used his last words to shout at Nesrin, "Run!"
He could tell she didn't. Another scream. He couldn't tell if it was from him or from her. If it was from her... he was going to tear those zoslte limb from limb.
His mind felt the final surge of pain. And all that was left was the wolf.
Kill, it thought.
Suddenly Faolan was ploughing through the zoslte. Tearing them apart. Leaving behind simple skulls. When there were only five zoslte left, the wolf noticed a small girl huddled in a corner. Faolan licked his lips. The girl would be an easy target. He stalked over to the girl and took a small step back upon seeing the knife that she held but it wouldn't hurt him. The thing was very dull.
Before he could pounce, He felt a hand like needles wrap around his tail. It pulled hard.
Faolan gave a yelp and whirled around to attack his attacker. He wasn't fast enough or strong enough. He laid a single bite on the zoslte which had grabbed him, but was quickly thrown across the room and hit the wall with a hard thump.
Then he was himself again.
