Chapter 6: Forbidden Fires
The rain tapped softly against the glass of Lila's office window, casting faint shadows on the darkened walls. The city outside blurred into a haze of glowing lights, and for once, Lila was grateful for the quiet. She had stayed late, hoping to drown out the turmoil inside her with work, but the silence only seemed to amplify it.
A soft knock broke the stillness. Before she could answer, the door cracked open, and Dominic Raines stepped inside. His presence filled the room effortlessly, his tailored charcoal suit clinging to him like a second skin, his gaze locked on hers.
"I saw the light on," he said, his voice smooth as velvet. "I thought you might need a break."
Lila leaned back in her chair, her fingers instinctively tightening around the pen she held. "What are you doing here so late?"
Dominic smiled faintly, a hint of mischief in his eyes. "Inspiration doesn't keep business hours."
He crossed the room with a predatory grace, a cup of coffee in hand. Placing it on her desk, he leaned against the edge, far too close for comfort. Lila's pulse quickened, and she hated how easily he unsettled her.
"Are you always this persistent?" she asked, her tone laced with sarcasm.
"Only when something—or someone—deserves it," Dominic replied, his voice dropping just enough to send a shiver down her spine.
Lila rolled her eyes, but her cheeks betrayed her, warming under his intense gaze. "You're trouble," she said, standing and moving to the window, putting distance between them.
"Maybe," he said, following her, his footsteps soft on the carpet. "But so are you."
The First Spark
Lila turned to face him, her back against the glass. "You don't know me well enough to say that."
Dominic tilted his head, his dark eyes piercing. "I know more than you think. I see the way you hold back, the way you hide parts of yourself from the world. But there's fire in you, Lila. I can feel it."
His words felt like a challenge, daring her to deny the parts of herself she had buried. For a fleeting moment, she wanted to let go, to give in to the storm he stirred inside her. But then Ethan's face flashed in her mind, grounding her.
"This isn't appropriate," she said, her voice firmer now.
Dominic stepped closer, his proximity intoxicating. "I'm not asking for appropriate. I'm asking for honesty. Tell me you don't feel it."
Lila's breath hitched as his hand brushed hers, the touch electric. She should have pulled away, but she didn't. Couldn't. The air between them crackled with tension, and for a moment, the world outside her office ceased to exist.
"I can't," she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Dominic's lips curved into a knowing smile. "Then don't."
And then he kissed her.
The Flames Ignite
It was a kiss unlike any Lila had ever known. Dominic's lips were firm and commanding, yet his touch was surprisingly tender, as if savoring her like a secret he'd kept too long. Her body betrayed her, responding to him with a hunger that frightened and thrilled her all at once.
His hands found her waist, pulling her closer, and she let herself fall into him, into the chaos of the moment. Her mind screamed at her to stop, to think, but her body refused to listen. The glass of the window was cool against her back, a stark contrast to the heat between them.
Dominic's lips left hers, trailing a line of fire down her neck. "You're incredible," he murmured against her skin, his voice thick with desire.
Lila's hands found his chest, her nails digging into the fabric of his shirt. "This is wrong," she whispered, though her words lacked conviction.
"Sometimes the best things are," he countered, his lips finding hers again, silencing her protests.
The Aftermath
When they finally pulled apart, both breathless, the weight of what had just happened settled over them like a storm cloud. Lila's cheeks burned as she straightened her dress, her mind racing with guilt and confusion.
"I shouldn't have..." she began, but Dominic cut her off.
"Don't," he said softly, his hand brushing her cheek. "Don't ruin this by overthinking it."
She stepped back, creating space between them. "I need time to process this."
Dominic nodded, his gaze softening. "Take all the time you need. But don't pretend this wasn't real."
As he left, Lila sank into her chair, her hands trembling. She felt like she was standing on the edge of a precipice, staring into a chasm that promised both danger and exhilaration.
A Fractured Heart
When Lila finally made it home, Ethan was waiting for her, his smile warm as he pulled her into his arms. She wanted to melt into him, to let his love wash away the guilt that clung to her like a second skin. But Dominic's touch lingered, a ghost she couldn't shake.
Ethan kissed her forehead, his hands resting on her hips. "You've been quiet lately," he said, concern flickering in his eyes. "Is everything okay?"
Lila forced a smile. "Just work stress," she lied, hating herself for it.
Ethan nodded, his trust in her evident, and it broke her heart. She knew she was standing at a crossroads, and whichever path she chose, someone would be hurt.
As she lay in bed that night, Ethan's arms around her, Lila stared at the ceiling, her mind replaying the kiss with Dominic over and over. She was caught in a web of her own making, and she didn't know how to escape without tearing everything apart.
