Chapter 34: The Storm Within

The rain hammered against the windows, a relentless drumbeat that matched the storm brewing inside Ethan's mind. He leaned against the kitchen counter, his fingers gripping the edge so tightly his knuckles turned white. The confrontation with Dominic at the club replayed in his mind like a broken record, each word sharpening his resolve.

He had made his move, but this wasn't over. Dominic was dangerous, and the stakes were higher than ever. The game was spiraling out of control, and Ethan knew he had to protect Tessa. She was his sanctuary, the one light in the dark, but now she was a target. Dominic would see to that.

Ethan pulled out his phone, dialing Tessa's number with urgency. When she picked up, her voice was soft but tinged with concern.

"Ethan? What's going on?"

"I need you to stay safe, Tessa," he said, his voice low but firm. "Don't go anywhere alone. Lock your doors. I don't trust Dominic, and I know he'll come for you if he thinks it will get to me."

There was a pause on the other end of the line before she replied. "Ethan, I'm not afraid of him. But... I'll be careful. Are you okay?"

Ethan closed his eyes, the weight of everything pressing down on him. "I will be. Just promise me, Tessa. Promise me you'll stay safe."

"I promise," she said softly. "But you need to promise me you won't do anything reckless."

Ethan hesitated. He couldn't make that promise—not with everything at stake. "I'll do what I have to," he said instead, his tone leaving no room for argument.

Meanwhile, Tessa paced her apartment, her mind spinning. Ethan's warning had unsettled her, but not for the reasons he might think. She wasn't afraid of Dominic. No, it was Lila who had been creeping into her thoughts, her actions increasingly erratic and unpredictable. Lila was unraveling, and Tessa could feel the tension building between them like a taut wire ready to snap.

When the knock came at her door, Tessa froze. Her heart leapt into her throat, but she forced herself to move, crossing the room with deliberate steps. She peered through the peephole, and her stomach dropped when she saw who it was.

Lila.

Tessa hesitated, but the knock came again, harder this time. With a resigned breath, she unlocked the door and opened it. Lila stood on the threshold, her hair plastered to her face from the rain, her eyes wild.

"We need to talk," Lila said, brushing past Tessa into the apartment without waiting for an invitation.

Tessa closed the door, her muscles tensing. "What are you doing here, Lila?"

Lila spun around, her gaze sharp. "I could ask you the same thing, Tessa. You've been awfully cozy with my husband lately."

Tessa's jaw clenched. "You've got some nerve. You're the one who's been lying, sneaking around, tearing your marriage apart. Don't come here and try to play the victim."

Lila's eyes narrowed. "You think you're so much better, don't you? Sitting on your high horse, pretending you're not part of the problem."

Tessa stepped closer, her voice dropping to a dangerous low. "I'm not the one having an affair. I'm not the one who broke Ethan's heart."

Lila laughed, a bitter, hollow sound. "You think you're saving him? You're just a distraction, Tessa. Nothing more."

The words stung, but Tessa didn't flinch. Instead, she took another step forward, her anger boiling over. "And what are you, Lila? A selfish, manipulative liar who doesn't deserve him. Ethan deserves better, and you know it."

The tension snapped like a rubber band. Lila lunged forward, shoving Tessa back. Tessa stumbled but recovered quickly, her own fury propelling her forward. She shoved Lila in return, and suddenly, the room was a blur of flailing arms and raised voices.

"You don't get to ruin him!" Tessa shouted, her voice breaking with emotion. "Not after everything you've done!"

Lila swung at her, but Tessa caught her wrist, twisting it just enough to force Lila to back down. The two women stood there, breathing hard, their gazes locked in a battle of wills.

"I'm not afraid of you, Lila," Tessa said, her voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through her veins. "But you should be afraid of what you're becoming."

Lila yanked her arm free, her face a mask of rage. "You don't know anything about me, Tessa. You don't know what I've been through."

"Maybe not," Tessa admitted, her tone softening slightly. "But I know you're destroying yourself. And I know Ethan deserves better than this."

Lila's expression faltered for a moment, a flicker of doubt crossing her face. But then her walls went up again, and she turned on her heel, storming out of the apartment without another word.

As the door slammed shut, Tessa collapsed onto the couch, her body trembling. The fight had shaken her, but it had also solidified her resolve. She wasn't going to let Lila or Dominic destroy Ethan—not if she could help it.

But deep down, she knew this was far from over. The storm was only just beginning, and the stakes were higher than ever.

Across town, Dominic sat in his car, his fingers drumming on the steering wheel as he watched Ethan's house from a distance. His mind raced with plans, each one darker than the last. Ethan had outmaneuvered him once, but that was a mistake Dominic wouldn't make again.

A cruel smile tugged at his lips as he leaned back in his seat, his eyes gleaming with malice.

Ethan might think he was winning. But Dominic wasn't done playing yet.

Not by a long shot.
