Chapter 11: Love Language

Lila sat on the edge of Dominic's bed, the sheets tangled around her legs. The sun filtered through the curtains, casting a golden glow over the room, but the warmth in the light was no match for the heaviness in the air. Dominic stood by the window, shirtless, his hands gripping the frame as he stared out at the city. His jaw was set, the tension radiating from him like heat off asphalt.

"So this is it?" he said finally, his voice low and measured.

"For now," Lila replied softly, pulling the sheet around her shoulders. "Ethan's getting too close. If we're not careful..."

Dominic turned, his eyes narrowing as they met hers. "You mean if you're not careful."

Lila flinched at the accusation but didn't argue. He wasn't wrong. Ethan's quiet suspicions had begun to feel like a ticking time bomb, and the only way to diffuse it was to step back. At least for now.

"I'm not ending this," she said firmly, her voice trembling slightly. "I just need to... refocus. Give him the attention he needs so he doesn't suspect anything."

Dominic crossed the room in three long strides, standing in front of her with a look that made her heart ache and race all at once. "You're asking me to put everything on hold. To watch you go back to him, pretending everything's fine. Do you have any idea what that feels like?"

"Do you think this is easy for me?" Lila shot back, her voice rising. "I'm trying to juggle my marriage and... and this. I'm doing the best I can."

Dominic knelt in front of her, his hands on her knees. "You could have all of me, Lila. You know that. You just have to walk away from him."

The words hung in the air, heavy with possibility, but Lila shook her head. "It's not that simple."

"It is," Dominic whispered, his lips brushing against her knee. "But if this is what you need to do, I'll give you space. Just don't expect me to wait forever."

Ethan's Attempt at Connection

Back at home, Ethan had planned an evening for the two of them—a quiet dinner, soft music, and a bottle of her favorite wine. He wanted to bridge the distance that had grown between them, to remind her of the life they'd built together.

When Lila walked in, she paused, her eyes taking in the candles flickering on the dining table and the soft glow of the fireplace. "What's all this?" she asked, setting her bag down.

"Just wanted to surprise you," Ethan said, coming to greet her with a kiss. "I feel like we haven't had much time together lately."

Lila smiled, but it didn't quite reach her eyes. "You didn't have to go through all this trouble."

"It's no trouble," Ethan said, leading her to the table. "I just miss you."

They sat down to eat, the clinking of silverware against plates filling the silence between them. Ethan watched her carefully, noting the way she seemed distracted, her gaze flicking to her phone every so often.

"Lila," he said suddenly, breaking the silence. "Are we okay?"

She looked up, startled. "What do you mean?"

"I mean... us. You've been distant. I know work's been crazy, but I just want to make sure you're happy."

"I am," she said quickly, reaching across the table to take his hand. "I promise, Ethan. Things have just been... overwhelming. But I love you."

Ethan studied her face, searching for the truth in her words. "I love you too," he said finally, though the unease in his chest remained.

Lila's Struggle

Later that night, as Ethan slept beside her, Lila stared at her phone, her thumb hovering over Dominic's name in her messages. They had agreed to take a break, but the pull she felt toward him was like a gravitational force.

I miss you, she typed, her heart pounding as she hit send.

The reply came almost instantly. I miss you too. Come over.

Lila hesitated, her eyes darting to Ethan's sleeping form. She couldn't. Not tonight. But the longing in her chest was unbearable.

I can't. Not yet, she replied, setting her phone down with a heavy sigh.

The divide between her two lives felt insurmountable, and for the first time, she wondered how long she could keep this up.

Ethan's Lingering Doubts

The next morning, Ethan woke to find Lila already up, her phone in hand as she sat at the kitchen table. She looked up when he entered, her smile bright and easy, but Ethan couldn't shake the feeling that it was forced.

"I was thinking we could go out this weekend," he said, pouring himself a cup of coffee. "Just the two of us. Maybe take a drive up to the mountains."

"Sounds nice," Lila said, though her tone was distracted.

Ethan leaned against the counter, watching her. "You know, I was looking at our phone bill the other day. There's a number that keeps showing up. Someone you work with?"

Lila's head snapped up, her eyes wide for a fraction of a second before she caught herself. "Oh, yeah. That's probably Claire. We've been coordinating on a big project."

Ethan nodded slowly, though her explanation did little to soothe his unease. He didn't press further, but he made a mental note to keep an eye on things.

The Affair's Quiet Flame

That afternoon, Lila sat in her car outside Dominic's apartment. She hadn't planned to come, but her feet had carried her there as though on autopilot. Her phone buzzed with a message from him: I see you. Come up.

Lila's hands gripped the steering wheel, her mind warring with her heart. She shouldn't be there. She should drive away. But the thought of seeing him, of feeling his touch, was too tempting to resist.

When she entered his apartment, Dominic was waiting for her, his arms pulling her into a fierce embrace. "I knew you couldn't stay away," he murmured against her hair.

"I shouldn't be here," Lila whispered, though her hands betrayed her as they clung to him.

"But you are," Dominic said, his lips capturing hers in a kiss that made her knees weak.

For a moment, all her doubts and guilt melted away, replaced by the intoxicating pull of him.
