Chapter 36: Tangled Shadows

The night was quiet, but it wasn't peaceful. The quiet held a sharp edge, brimming with secrets and unresolved tension. Ethan stood at the window of his dimly lit study, staring out at the empty street. His reflection in the glass was a shadowed version of himself, eyes dark with suspicion, lips pressed into a grim line. The weight of the past weeks bore down on him like a relentless storm.

Tessa's warning about Lila earlier replayed in his mind, her words lingering like the echo of thunder. "She's hiding something, Ethan. I can feel it." Tessa had been right about a lot of things lately, and Ethan couldn't afford to dismiss her instincts.

But there was more to it now—Tessa wasn't just his confidante anymore. Somewhere in the middle of unraveling his life, she had become his sanctuary.

He grabbed his phone, scrolling through messages, waiting for Tessa's reply to his earlier text. When her name finally lit up the screen, his heart beat faster, and the heaviness in his chest eased slightly.

Tessa: I'm here if you need me. Come over when you can.

Ethan stared at the words, debating. But before he could reply, the faint creak of a floorboard behind him made him spin around.

Lila stood in the doorway, her arms crossed over her chest. Her expression was unreadable, but her eyes had a flicker of something between anger and desperation.

"You're up late," Ethan said, his voice guarded.

"So are you," she replied, stepping into the room. Her gaze darted to his phone for a split second before meeting his. "We need to talk."

Ethan pocketed the phone, leaning against the desk. "About what?"

Lila's jaw tightened. "Don't play dumb, Ethan. You've been distant. You're never home, and when you are, it's like I'm not even here."

Ethan barked a bitter laugh, shaking his head. "That's rich, coming from you."

"What's that supposed to mean?" she snapped, her voice rising.

"It means," Ethan said, stepping closer, "that you don't get to play the victim here. You've been lying to me for months, Lila. Do you really think I haven't noticed?"

Her face paled, but she quickly masked it with indignation. "I don't know what you're talking about."

"Don't you?" Ethan's tone was icy, his eyes boring into hers. "Late nights. Secretive phone calls. A sudden interest in 'working late.' You think I don't see through it?"

Lila opened her mouth to retort, but the words didn't come. Instead, she turned her back to him, wrapping her arms around herself. "You're paranoid."

Ethan took a step closer, lowering his voice. "And you're a hypocrite."

That hit its mark. Lila whipped around, her face flushed with anger. "At least I'm not running to Tessa every time we fight," she spat.

Ethan's laugh was sharp and humorless. "You don't get to throw stones, Lila, not when you're living in a glass house. Who is he?"

Her silence was damning, but before Ethan could press further, she stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind her.

Across town, Dominic sat in his sleek black car, parked a block away from Tessa's apartment. His fingers drummed impatiently on the steering wheel as he watched the building through narrowed eyes.

The darkness in Dominic had been growing, festering into something dangerous. He could feel Lila slipping from his grasp, her focus torn between him and whatever fractured pieces of her marriage she was clinging to. And now Ethan—the man who had been nothing more than an obstacle—was becoming a threat.

His phone buzzed on the passenger seat. It was Lila.

Lila: I need to see you.

A slow smile spread across Dominic's face, but there was no warmth in it. Just the cold satisfaction of knowing she still came to him when she was unraveling.

Minutes later, Lila arrived at his apartment, her face a storm of emotions. Dominic opened the door for her, but she brushed past him without a word, pacing the room like a caged animal.

"He knows," she finally said, her voice trembling.

Dominic leaned against the wall, watching her with a calculated calm. "Knows what, exactly?"

"That I've been lying. That there's someone else."

Dominic smirked, stepping closer. "Then it's only a matter of time before he figures out who."

Lila stopped pacing, turning to face him. "You don't understand. He's different now. He's not the clueless husband I thought he was."

"Good," Dominic said, his voice low and menacing. "Let him come. I'll deal with him myself."

"No," Lila said quickly, shaking her head. "This has gone too far already. I don't want anyone getting hurt."

Dominic's eyes darkened, and he closed the distance between them. "You should've thought about that before you dragged me into your mess."

Lila glared at him, her fear giving way to anger. "You're as much a part of this as I am. Don't act like you're innocent."

Dominic's hand shot out, grabbing her wrist. "You're mine, Lila. And I don't share."

Her breath hitched as his grip tightened, his intensity both terrifying and intoxicating. Before she could protest, his lips crashed against hers, claiming her in a way that left no room for doubt.

But as the passion between them ignited, neither noticed the faint shadow moving outside the window.

Ethan stood in the shadows across the street, his heart pounding as he watched Dominic's apartment. His suspicions had been confirmed, but the sight of Lila with Dominic felt like a knife twisting in his chest.

He turned away, his mind racing with plans. This wasn't over. Not by a long shot.

As he walked back to his car, his phone buzzed.

Tessa: Be careful.

Ethan stared at the message, his jaw tightening. He had no intention of being careful. Not anymore.

He was done playing their games. Now, it was time to turn the tables.

Cliffhanger: Dominic's car screeched out of his driveway minutes after Ethan left the scene, unaware that the tables were already shifting.
