Chapter 27: Crossroads of Desire and Deception
Lila's head swam with conflicting emotions as she drove toward Dominic's condo. The weight of Ethan's accusations earlier that evening bore down on her chest, tightening her breath. He had seen through her façade, but instead of exploding, he had simply walked away. His calmness unsettled her more than any argument ever could.
Dominic's words on the phone repeated in her mind like a haunting refrain: "Do I need to take care of Ethan permanently?"
As she parked her car, the dim light of the streetlamp illuminated Dominic's imposing figure at his front door. He leaned against the frame, his sharp eyes locked on her. Despite the chill in the air, he exuded warmth that Lila couldn't resist, even as her conscience screamed at her.
Inside, the tension crackled between them. Dominic poured her a glass of wine, watching her with a mix of desire and frustration. She avoided his gaze, swirling the crimson liquid in her glass.
"You're late," he finally said, his voice tinged with impatience.
"Ethan and I argued," Lila replied, her tone clipped. "He's... different now. It's like he doesn't care anymore."
Dominic smirked and leaned forward. "That's a good thing, isn't it? Less suspicion, more freedom for us."
Lila shook her head. "It's not that simple. He's pulling away. And it's making me feel..."
Dominic's brow arched. "Making you feel what, Lila? Regret? Guilt? Because you didn't seem too guilty last night." His hand brushed her arm, his touch electric.
She pulled away, her voice firm. "I don't regret us. But Ethan is my husband. I can't just—"
"Just what? Pretend this doesn't exist?" Dominic interrupted, his frustration boiling over. He stepped closer, his intensity overwhelming. "I give you what he doesn't. What he can't. And you're worried about him now?"
Lila looked away, her voice faltering. "It's not that simple, Dominic."
"Then make it simple," he growled. "If he's a problem, let me handle it."
Her eyes snapped to his, wide with alarm. "You're not serious."
Dominic's gaze didn't waver. "You think I'll let him keep you from me? I've been patient, Lila. But my patience has limits."
"You can't just—"
"I can," he interrupted, his voice low and dangerous. "Say the word, and Ethan won't be an issue anymore."
The room fell silent as his words hung heavily between them. Lila's heart raced as she struggled to find her voice. "Dominic, you can't. I won't let you."
His jaw tightened. "Then you need to figure out what you want, Lila. Because I'm done sharing you."
Meanwhile, Ethan sat in Tessa's dimly lit living room, nursing a glass of bourbon. The warmth of the drink dulled the edges of his frustration, but his mind remained a storm of thoughts. Tessa sat across from him, her legs curled beneath her as she listened intently.
"She accused me of being distant," Ethan said with a bitter laugh. "Can you believe that?"
Tessa tilted her head, her expression soft. "She's projecting. People do that when they're hiding something."
Ethan sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Maybe. But I'm tired of trying to figure her out. I'm tired of feeling like I'm the only one holding this marriage together."
Tessa reached out, placing her hand on his. "You deserve better, Ethan. You deserve someone who sees you, who values you."
Their eyes met, the space between them charged with unspoken tension. Ethan hesitated, his voice barely a whisper. "Sometimes I think about what life would be like if I just... let it all go."
"Then let it go," Tessa replied, her voice steady. She leaned closer, her breath warm against his cheek. "You don't have to carry this alone."
Ethan's resolve crumbled as he closed the distance between them, their lips meeting in a kiss that was both tender and desperate. Tessa's hands slid around his neck, pulling him closer as they lost themselves in the moment.
For the first time in weeks, Ethan felt at peace.
Back at the condo, Lila paced the living room, her nerves fraying. Dominic watched her with a mix of amusement and irritation. "You're overthinking this," he said, his voice calm.
"You're underestimating him," Lila snapped. "Ethan's not as oblivious as you think."
Dominic stepped forward, his hand gripping her wrist. "Then stop worrying about him and focus on us. Or do you want him to win?"
Lila pulled her hand away, her voice sharp. "This isn't a game, Dominic."
"Isn't it?" he challenged, his eyes blazing. "Because I'm playing to win, Lila. And I don't lose."
The night was still as Ethan returned home, his mind clouded by thoughts of Tessa. He paused at the foot of the stairs, hearing muffled voices from the bedroom. His heart pounded as he crept closer, straining to hear.
Lila's voice was low but urgent. "We can't do anything drastic, Dominic. I'll handle it."
Dominic's reply was calm but chilling. "You'd better. Because if you don't, I will."
Ethan's blood ran cold as he stepped back into the shadows, his mind racing. Whatever Lila was hiding, it was darker than he had imagined—and he was determined to uncover the truth.
