Chapter 17: The Bitter Truth
Ethan had never felt so desperate. The walls of his home seemed to close in on him with every passing hour, every question he could never quite answer. Lila had become a stranger to him. She'd been distant for months, her eyes shifting away when he looked too long, her touch too brief when it used to be electric. He tried to convince himself that it was just stress, that maybe she was just going through a phase. But deep down, the gnawing suspicion refused to fade.
She's hiding something.
He had gone to every length to uncover the truth: the late-night searches, the covert glances, the desperate hope that something, anything, would slip through the cracks. But each lead seemed to dry up. The hotel receipt. The odd phone call he overheard once. All of it was dead ends. His mind spun with paranoia, the only thing left was his gut feeling—and that was telling him he was on the edge of something far worse than he had imagined.
Tonight, after yet another awkward dinner where Lila barely touched her food, he decided to act. He couldn't keep ignoring the gnawing need for answers. He needed to confront her. But his mind wandered, as it had all week, to the man who had become his strange, unintended confidant: Dominic.
Dominic. The man who had so effortlessly slipped into Ethan's life like a comforting whisper, offering advice, a friendly ear. They had bonded over shared stories of their jobs, their daily lives. Ethan found comfort in Dominic's presence, though something about him felt... off. Dominic had always been just a little too casual, too eager to sympathize with Ethan's struggles. Now that Ethan thought about it, he realized it was almost as though Dominic had been waiting for him to spill the truth.
As Ethan left his house in search of answers, he spotted Dominic standing by the local pub, the neon sign above him casting a red glow on his silhouette. He was leaning against the wall, looking too relaxed for someone who had just left work. Ethan's heart raced with a mix of frustration and anger—frustration that he still hadn't uncovered anything solid about Lila, and anger that he couldn't seem to shake the feeling that the answers were right in front of him.
He approached Dominic, trying to calm his nerves. But when Dominic turned around and flashed that easy smile, something inside Ethan twisted. He had no idea why, but he felt like Dominic knew more than he was letting on.
"Hey, man," Ethan greeted, his voice tight.
Dominic's eyes brightened as he clapped Ethan on the shoulder. "What's up, Ethan? Everything good?"
Ethan ran a hand through his hair, letting out a frustrated sigh. "I don't know, Dom. I feel like something's wrong. Something's off with Lila. She's been distant, and I... I just don't know what's going on. She's always on edge around me. I've tried to talk to her, but she keeps dodging everything. I can't put my finger on it."
Dominic's smile never wavered, though his eyes seemed to glimmer with a certain satisfaction that made Ethan pause. He leaned in closer, lowering his voice as if he was imparting some great secret.
"Maybe you're just overthinking it, man. Relationships go through rough patches. You know that. You've been together for a long time. She probably just needs space. You're both probably just a little too... stuck in your own heads."
Ethan wasn't sure why, but the way Dominic said it, the way he shrugged it off so easily, made something inside Ethan tighten uncomfortably. Why did Dominic seem so calm about this?
Ethan felt the frustration boiling in him again. "I don't think this is just a rough patch, Dom. There's something I'm missing. I keep going in circles, looking for answers, and all I keep getting is dead ends. I'm thinking maybe she's seeing someone else."
Dominic's eyes flashed briefly, a slight twitch in his expression that Ethan almost missed. He caught it, though, and something about it didn't sit right with him. It was subtle, but it was enough to make his heart race again.
"Dude, slow down," Dominic said, his voice light, too light. "You're jumping to conclusions. You can't just go assuming things without evidence. You've gotta talk to her, man. Sit down, have a real conversation. You might be surprised."
Ethan's gut churned, but he tried to push past the discomfort. "I've tried talking to her, Dom. Over and over again. She won't let me in. It's like she's keeping me at arm's length, and I don't know why."
Dominic nodded, his lips curling into a tight, knowing smile. "I get it, I do. But sometimes we have to trust that people have their reasons. You might not like what you find, and sometimes, not knowing is better than knowing."
The way he said it, with that strange, condescending tone, made Ethan's skin crawl. He looked at Dominic harder now, trying to read him, trying to sense anything that could explain this odd feeling rising in him. But there was nothing. Dominic was just smiling, the friendly, open man Ethan had come to know, who somehow now seemed distant and unreadable.
"You sure you're okay with this?" Ethan asked, leaning in closer. "I mean, with what's going on with Lila? Are you sure there's nothing you're not telling me?"
Dominic met his gaze without hesitation, and for a brief moment, there was something darker in his eyes—something dangerous. But just as quickly as it had appeared, it was gone, replaced by that same warm, almost sympathetic look.
"I'm fine, Ethan. But I think you're making a bigger deal out of this than it is. You should just trust her. Trust yourself."
Ethan wasn't convinced, but his gut told him to back off. He couldn't quite put his finger on it, but something about Dominic was off, and it had been for a while.
As the conversation wound down, Ethan couldn't shake the feeling that something was slipping through his fingers. He could feel the answers out there, just out of his reach. But Dominic had successfully distracted him—maybe too successfully. As Ethan said his goodbyes and walked away, his mind was still racing.
Could it really be that simple? Or is Dominic just leading me away from the truth?
Later that night, as Ethan sat in his empty house, his thoughts returned to Lila. The woman he loved was slipping through his fingers, and he wasn't sure if he'd ever be able to catch her again.
His phone buzzed on the counter. He glanced down at the message, his stomach tightening. It was from Dominic.
"I hope you don't mind me telling you, but I saw Lila last night. She wasn't alone."
Ethan's blood ran cold.
What was Dominic trying to tell him?
Before he could even process the message, another text came through.
"Maybe you should look into her late-night outings more closely. I think you'll be surprised by what you find."
The hairs on the back of Ethan's neck stood on end. Dominic knew more than he was letting on. But what exactly?
As Ethan's hand trembled over his phone, he couldn't shake the feeling that he was standing on the edge of something huge—something that would change everything. But was he ready for the truth?
