Chapter 37: No Way Out

The cold wind whipped through the empty street as Ethan parked his car a block away from Dominic's apartment. His heart pounded, not from fear, but from the rush of adrenaline that came with knowing he was on the verge of dismantling everything Dominic thought he controlled.

For weeks, Dominic had been the hunter, but Ethan was no longer the prey. The realization burned in his chest: it was time to reclaim his life, his dignity, and his power.

He stepped out of the car, his boots crunching against the gravel as he moved silently toward the building. From the shadows, he could see the glow of lights in Dominic's apartment. Through a gap in the curtains, he caught a glimpse of Dominic pacing the living room, phone pressed to his ear. Lila wasn't there.

Ethan's lips curled into a grim smile. Good. Let's see how you like being the one watched.

Inside Dominic's Apartment

Dominic slammed his phone onto the coffee table, his face twisted in frustration. Lila had left in a hurry after their last argument, and her parting words haunted him.

"If you won't stop, Dominic, I will."

He couldn't trust her anymore. She was too emotional, too unpredictable. And now Ethan was becoming more of a threat than he anticipated. Dominic's instincts, honed from years of manipulation and control, told him that Ethan was no longer in the dark.

Dominic poured himself a drink, the amber liquid swirling in the glass as he gripped it tightly. His mind raced with plans, contingencies, and ways to eliminate Ethan once and for all.

The sudden sound of a creak outside his window made him freeze. His eyes darted to the curtains, but when he pulled them back, the street below was empty.

He downed the drink in one gulp, the burn doing little to calm his nerves. For the first time, Dominic felt the unsettling prickle of being watched.

Ethan's Move

Ethan crouched in the alley behind Dominic's building, his breath visible in the cold night air. He pulled his phone from his pocket, opening a secure app the private investigator had installed. A live feed from the bugged camera inside Dominic's apartment appeared on the screen.

Dominic's restless pacing filled the frame. Ethan watched, his jaw tightening as he observed the man who had upended his life, who had stolen his wife and dared to stalk him.

Ethan's fingers hovered over the screen, debating whether to send the message he'd drafted earlier.

To Dominic: Do you feel safe in your castle, Dominic? Because you shouldn't.

He hesitated, then pressed send.

Dominic's Perspective

The chime of a text shattered the silence in the room. Dominic grabbed his phone, expecting a message from Lila. Instead, the words on the screen made his blood run cold.

Do you feel safe in your castle, Dominic? Because you shouldn't.

Dominic's eyes scanned the room as if expecting Ethan to materialize out of thin air. His grip on the phone tightened, and he quickly called Lila, but it went straight to voicemail.

"Coward," Dominic hissed under his breath. "You think this scares me?"

But the truth was, it did. Ethan's sudden shift from passive to aggressive unsettled him. He had underestimated the man, and now the game had changed.

Dominic grabbed his keys and stormed out of the apartment. If Ethan wanted to play, he would make sure he regretted it.

Lila and Tessa's Showdown

Meanwhile, Lila sat in her car outside Tessa's apartment, her fingers gripping the steering wheel as she debated whether to go inside. Tessa had always been a wildcard, and after their last icy exchange, Lila knew she was playing with fire.

But she couldn't shake the feeling that Tessa knew more than she was letting on. If Ethan and Tessa were working together, it would explain so much.

Gathering her nerve, Lila stepped out of the car and knocked on Tessa's door.

Tessa opened it, her expression shifting from surprise to barely concealed disdain. "Lila. This is a surprise."

"We need to talk," Lila said, pushing past her into the apartment.

Tessa crossed her arms, leaning against the doorframe. "About what? How you've turned everyone's life into a soap opera?"

Lila's eyes narrowed. "Don't act innocent, Tessa. I know you've been spending time with Ethan."

"Spending time?" Tessa smirked. "Try being there for him when you weren't."

The words stung, but Lila refused to let it show. "What do you know, Tessa? About me? About Dominic?"

Tessa stepped closer, her voice dropping. "I know you're in over your head. And I know Ethan deserves better than this twisted game you're playing."

Lila's hand shot out, slapping Tessa across the face. Tessa staggered but quickly recovered, her eyes blazing with fury.

Without warning, Tessa lunged, grabbing Lila by the collar and shoving her against the wall. "You think you can intimidate me, Lila? Think again."

The room was thick with tension, the two women locked in a battle of wills. But before either could escalate further, Lila's phone buzzed in her pocket. She fumbled for it, her hands shaking as she read the message.

Dominic: Meet me at the docks. Now.

The Docks

Lila found Dominic standing by the water, his figure silhouetted against the faint glow of the moon. The air was sharp with the scent of salt and rust, and the creaking of boats added to the eerie stillness.

"What's going on?" Lila asked, her voice trembling.

Dominic turned to her, his face unreadable. "Ethan's getting bold. Too bold. It's time to end this."

Lila's stomach churned. "What do you mean?"

"I mean," Dominic said, stepping closer, "that he needs to be removed from the equation. Permanently."

Lila shook her head, backing away. "No, Dominic. This has gone too far."

Dominic grabbed her arm, his grip like iron. "It's gone too far because you let it. But don't worry, Lila. I'll handle everything."

As Dominic spoke, neither noticed the shadowy figure watching them from the edge of the pier. Ethan stood in the darkness, his phone recording every word.

The hunter had truly become the hunted.
