Chapter 16: Threads Unraveling
Ethan sat alone in the dim light of the living room, the silence of the house pressing in on him. Lila was upstairs, presumably asleep, but he couldn't shake the feeling that something was fundamentally wrong. He stared at the flickering television, but the sounds blurred into white noise as his mind raced.
He had been racking his brain for weeks, trying to pinpoint the moment their marriage had shifted. Was it his fault? Had he done something—or not done something—to push her away?
Grabbing a notebook from the side table, he began jotting down the milestones of their life together:
Their first date – an awkward but magical dinner that ended with her laughing so hard at his bad jokes, she cried.
Their wedding day – a whirlwind of joy, vows exchanged under a canopy of flowers.
The first fight – a stupid argument over finances that ended with him apologizing for days, despite being in the right.
He stared at the list. It all seemed so normal, so good. Yet something was broken now, and he couldn't figure out why.
Two Worlds Apart
While Ethan dwelled on the past, Lila was tangled in the sheets of a hotel room with Dominic, her skin slick with sweat as she lost herself in his touch.
"Stay with me tonight," he whispered, his lips trailing down her neck.
"I can't," she replied breathlessly, her fingers weaving through his hair.
"You never stay," Dominic said, his voice a mix of frustration and longing. He cupped her face, forcing her to look at him. "When are you going to stop pretending with him and be with me?"
Lila's heart clenched. There was no denying the way Dominic made her feel—alive, desired, free. But Ethan was her husband, the man she had built a life with. The thought of shattering that life terrified her.
"I don't know," she whispered, her voice trembling. "I don't know if I can."
Dominic kissed her, hard and possessive, as if trying to claim her indecision. "You'll have to choose, Lila. Sooner or later."
The Fight
Back at home, Lila found Ethan waiting for her, his expression stormy.
"Where have you been?" he asked, his voice tight.
"Out with friends," she lied, slipping off her coat.
"At ten at night?" His eyes bore into hers, searching for the truth.
"Why are you interrogating me, Ethan?" she snapped, her guilt manifesting as anger. "Do you have any idea how exhausting this is? You've been so clingy lately."
"Clingy?" he echoed, his voice rising. "I'm trying to figure out what's going on with us, Lila! You're distant, cold—you won't even look me in the eye half the time."
The fight escalated, each accusation cutting deeper than the last. Finally, Ethan grabbed his keys.
"I can't do this right now," he said, his voice heavy with frustration. "I need air."
He slammed the door behind him, leaving Lila alone with her racing thoughts.
A Chance Encounter
Ethan found himself at a nearby bar, nursing a whiskey and staring into its amber depths. He barely noticed the woman who slid onto the stool beside him until she spoke.
"Ethan Walker? Is that really you?"
He turned, his brow furrowing in confusion before recognition dawned. "Jessica? Jessica Whitman?"
Her smile was radiant, her dark curls framing a face that hadn't changed much since high school. They fell into easy conversation, reminiscing about old times. Jessica's laughter was warm, her touch lingering on his arm as she leaned closer.
"You know, I had the biggest crush on you back then," she admitted, her cheeks flushing.
Ethan chuckled, feeling a warmth he hadn't felt in a long time. But as Jessica's hand brushed his, a pang of guilt twisted in his chest.
"I'm married," he said softly, pulling his hand away.
Jessica's smile faltered but didn't fade entirely. "Lucky woman," she said, raising her glass. "I hope she knows what she's got."
Seeking Answers
The next day, Ethan couldn't shake the feeling that something was being kept from him. If Lila wasn't talking to him, maybe she was talking to someone else.
He called her best friend, Tessa, under the pretense of planning a surprise for Lila.
"Has she said anything to you about... us?" Ethan asked carefully.
Tessa hesitated, and in that pause, Ethan felt his stomach drop.
"She's been stressed," Tessa said finally. "Work, life—it's a lot, Ethan. Just be patient with her."
"She's been distant," he pressed. "Do you think there's someone else?"
"Ethan, don't go there," Tessa said, her tone firm. "Lila loves you. Don't let your imagination ruin what you have."
But as the call ended, Ethan couldn't shake the gnawing doubt. If Tessa was covering for Lila, that meant there was something worth covering.
Caught Between Two Worlds
Lila was back in Dominic's arms that evening, her guilt over Ethan forgotten in the heat of Dominic's touch.
"You're mine," Dominic murmured against her lips, his hands exploring her with a familiarity that sent shivers down her spine.
But even as she surrendered to him, Ethan's face flashed in her mind. His hurt, his confusion. It was a knife to her heart, but not enough to pull her away.
Dominic's obsession was suffocating, but his passion was addictive. And as much as she hated herself for it, she wasn't ready to let him go.
