Chapter 10: Ghost in the Machine

The morning light seeped through the blinds, casting pale streaks across the bedroom. Ethan sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the small blinking light on Lila's phone. A single notification—nothing more than a social media alert—flickered across the screen, yet it gnawed at him. He didn't know what he was looking for, but every instinct told him there was something he wasn't seeing, something hidden in plain sight.

Lila stirred beside him, her hair falling in soft waves across her face as she blinked awake. "Morning," she murmured, her voice groggy.

Ethan turned to her, forcing a smile. "Morning."

He wanted to ask her outright—wanted to demand answers—but every time he got close, the words stuck in his throat. What if he was wrong? What if his suspicions were just shadows, figments of his own insecurities? But what if they weren't?

The First Probe

Over breakfast, Ethan tried to tread carefully. Lila sipped her coffee, scrolling through her phone as though nothing was amiss. She looked calm, serene even, and for a moment, Ethan hated himself for doubting her.

"You've been busy lately," he said casually, watching her reaction.

Lila didn't look up from her phone. "Work's been crazy, you know that. Why?"

"Just feels like we haven't spent much time together," he said, keeping his tone light. "I miss us."

Lila finally set her phone down, a faint smile tugging at her lips. "Ethan, we're fine. It's just a busy season. Once things settle down, we'll take a trip or something, okay?"

Ethan nodded, but her words felt rehearsed, too perfect. He decided to push a little further.

"Are you sure it's just work?" he asked, his eyes searching hers. "You've been... different lately."

Lila's smile faltered for the briefest moment before she recovered. "What are you trying to say?"

"Nothing," Ethan said quickly. "I just feel like there's something you're not telling me."

Lila's expression hardened, her eyes narrowing. "Ethan, if you're accusing me of something, just say it."

The Gaslighting

The air between them grew thick, charged with tension. Ethan hesitated, torn between pressing on and backing down.

"I'm not accusing you of anything," he said, his voice tight. "I'm just trying to understand why things feel... off."

"Off?" Lila's tone was sharp now, defensive. "You're imagining things. I've been working late and trying to keep everything together, and now you're sitting here implying that I'm lying to you?"

Ethan bristled at her words, frustration bubbling beneath the surface. "I didn't say that. I just—"

"You just what?" Lila cut him off, standing from the table. "You think I'm sneaking around? That I'm doing something behind your back? God, Ethan, you've always had a way of making everything about your insecurities."

The words hit Ethan like a slap, and he recoiled. "That's not fair," he said, his voice low. "I just want to know the truth."

"The truth is you're paranoid," Lila snapped, her eyes blazing. "Maybe you should spend less time doubting me and more time trusting me."

Ethan stared at her, his chest tightening with a mix of anger and hurt. He wanted to believe her, wanted to trust the woman he loved. But the way she avoided his gaze, the way her words felt calculated, only deepened his doubts.

"Maybe I'm just imagining things," he said finally, his voice defeated.

Lila sighed, softening her tone. "You are, Ethan. I love you. I've been stressed, yes, but that doesn't mean there's some big conspiracy. Please, let's not do this."

Ethan nodded, though his heart was far from convinced.

The Affair Intensifies

Later that day, Lila found herself in Dominic's arms once again, the tension of the morning fading under his touch. They were in his apartment, the city skyline stretching out beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows. Dominic's kisses were fierce, urgent, and Lila melted into him, losing herself in the fire they created.

"You're quiet today," Dominic murmured, his lips grazing her neck. "Is it him?"

Lila closed her eyes, guilt momentarily overtaken by desire. "We had a fight this morning," she admitted. "He suspects something."

Dominic's hands tightened on her waist. "Does he know about us?"

"No," Lila said quickly. "He doesn't have any proof."

"Then stop worrying," Dominic said, tilting her face up to meet his gaze. "He has nothing. And even if he did, I wouldn't let him take you from me."

His words sent a shiver down Lila's spine. There was a possessiveness in his tone, one that both thrilled and frightened her. But when he kissed her again, all her doubts melted away.

They moved together with a desperate intensity, each touch igniting sparks that consumed them. Dominic made her feel alive in a way she hadn't in years, and though she knew it was wrong, she couldn't stop herself.

Ethan's Search for Answers

Back at home, Ethan sat in his office, staring at his computer screen. He had tried to brush off his suspicions, to tell himself that Lila was right—that he was imagining things. But something inside him wouldn't let it go.

He opened their shared phone account, scrolling through the call and text logs. Nothing stood out at first, but then he noticed a number that appeared repeatedly at odd hours. It wasn't saved in Lila's contacts, and a quick reverse lookup yielded nothing.

Ethan's heart raced as he stared at the number. It wasn't definitive proof, but it was a thread—something to pull at. He closed the browser and leaned back in his chair, his mind a storm of questions. Who was she talking to? And why was she hiding it?

The Tension Escalates

When Lila returned home that evening, Ethan was sitting on the couch, his expression unreadable. She greeted him with a kiss, but he didn't return it, his eyes studying her face.

"Long day?" he asked, his voice even.

"Yeah," Lila said, setting her bag down. "Clients are demanding as always."

Ethan nodded, his gaze lingering on her a moment too long. "You smell different," he said, his tone casual but pointed.

Lila froze for half a second before laughing nervously. "I stopped by a boutique downtown and tried a new perfume. You like it?"

Ethan forced a smile, masking the unease twisting in his gut. "Yeah, it's nice."

As Lila moved to the kitchen, Ethan sat back, his mind racing. He didn't have solid proof yet, but his instincts told him he was close to uncovering something. And when he did, he wasn't sure if their love could survive it.
