Chapter 22: Confessions in the Dark
The weight of the last few weeks had left Ethan exhausted. Every night, he lay awake next to Lila, the tension between them palpable, but it wasn't until he spent time with Tessa that he felt a moment of peace. The distance between him and his wife seemed insurmountable now. Lila's secrets—her coldness—had pushed him to the edge, and in Tessa, he found an unlikely comfort. She offered him understanding, a sense of safety he hadn't realized he needed until now.
Tonight was different. He couldn't shake the restlessness inside him. After another tense dinner with Lila, a silence that screamed of unspoken things, Ethan decided to reach out. He needed someone to talk to, to ease the pressure that had been building inside him for weeks.
Tessa was his first thought.
They met at a small coffee shop, far from the prying eyes of their friends or families. The darkened windows and the low hum of jazz music in the background created an intimate atmosphere. Tessa greeted him with a knowing smile, the one that said everything was okay, even when it wasn't.
They talked for hours. The conversation started out casual, but soon, it veered toward the subject neither of them could avoid. Ethan's eyes darkened as he spoke of Lila—of how she had changed, how her silence seemed deafening. Tessa listened patiently, offering no judgments, just quiet understanding.
But as the night wore on, the tension between them shifted. Ethan's frustration simmered, and it wasn't just about Lila anymore. Tessa's presence was calming, grounding. He found himself leaning into her words, hanging on to each moment of understanding, as if it was the only thing keeping him from unraveling.
Tessa's voice was soft, almost soothing. "You don't have to go through this alone, Ethan."
Her words lingered in the air, heavier than the coffee cups in front of them. Ethan didn't respond at first, unsure of what he was feeling. But he couldn't deny the connection between them. Every laugh, every subtle touch, every knowing glance made the air thicker, charged with something he couldn't quite explain.
He needed to blow off steam—needed to be heard. And for the first time in a long while, Tessa made him feel like he was seen. Truly seen.
They walked to her apartment afterward, the night air cool against their skin. Inside, the lights were dim, the room bathed in a soft golden glow from a nearby lamp. Ethan felt the space between them shrink with each passing second, but he didn't know what to do with it.
"I'm sorry you're going through this," Tessa said as she took a step closer. Her hand brushed against his, just enough to send a shiver down his spine.
"I just don't know what to do anymore," he admitted, his voice raw. "Lila... she's so distant, and I don't know how to reach her. It feels like I'm losing everything."
There was a pause, and Tessa stepped even closer, her warmth radiating against him. Ethan didn't pull away. Instead, he found himself leaning in, craving the comfort she offered.
"Sometimes, the ones we love push us away when we need them most," she whispered. "And sometimes... we need someone to remind us of who we are."
Ethan's heart pounded in his chest. The words were too close to what he had been feeling. He needed something—anything—to take away the aching loneliness that had settled deep in his bones. His hand moved toward Tessa's, instinctively, and she didn't pull back.
They stood there, close enough that the air between them felt electric. Tessa's gaze softened as she met his eyes, and for a moment, everything else disappeared.
But it wasn't the time. Ethan was still tangled in his thoughts, in his wife's silence, in the mess of emotions that had taken root. He couldn't—he shouldn't—allow himself to fall into the temptation that was standing right in front of him.
Tessa, however, had no such reservations. She reached up, her fingers brushing against his cheek, and leaned in. Her lips met his in a soft, hesitant kiss. Ethan hesitated for a moment, torn between what he thought was right and what he so desperately needed. But the kiss deepened, and in that moment, all the pain, all the uncertainty, seemed to melt away.
It wasn't a decision made lightly. But in that kiss, there was a release—a quiet surrender to the feelings that had been building all night. Ethan felt the weight of everything he had been carrying lift, if only for a moment.
When they finally pulled away, the silence in the room was thick, heavy with unsaid words. Tessa stepped back, her expression unreadable.
"I... I'm sorry," Ethan said, his voice strained. He wasn't sure what to say, but the guilt hit him immediately.
"You don't have to apologize," Tessa replied, her voice soft but firm. "We're both going through something, Ethan. But you need to figure out what you want... before it's too late."
The moment was broken, and Ethan knew that this night would forever change everything. He wasn't sure what he was feeling—confusion, desire, relief—but the questions swirling in his mind seemed to drown out everything else.
Tessa had given him something that night, something he didn't even know he needed. And though the weight of his marriage, of Lila's silence, still loomed large, there was something else now. Something he couldn't ignore.
As he left her apartment, the city streets seemed darker than before. Ethan's mind was a whirlwind, but one thing was certain: This was only the beginning.
The next morning, as the sunlight filtered through the blinds, Ethan's phone buzzed on the nightstand. A text from Lila.
"I need to talk to you. It's important. Meet me tonight."
His heart skipped a beat.
Was this it? Was this finally the conversation he had been waiting for?
Or was it another lie?
As the day stretched on, the weight of uncertainty gnawed at him. He had one last chance to uncover the truth. But the question remained: Would it be enough?
