Chapter 25: Dangerous Desires
Lila stood in Dominic's apartment, her arms crossed as she paced the floor. She couldn't shake the gnawing frustration that had consumed her since her argument with Ethan the night before. The way he'd brushed her off, as if her actions didn't matter anymore, stung in a way she didn't expect. For months, she'd thrived on the tension, on his desperate attempts to salvage their crumbling marriage. Now, his indifference was unnerving.
"You're thinking about him again, aren't you?" Dominic's voice cut through her thoughts, low and sharp. He stood near the window, his gaze locked on her.
Lila stopped pacing, her head snapping toward him. "What is that supposed to mean?"
"You're here with me, but your mind is somewhere else. It always is when it comes to Ethan." His words were clipped, his jaw tight as he stared at her.
Lila threw her hands up, exasperated. "Because he's my husband, Dominic! He's acting differently, and it's... it's messing with my head."
Dominic laughed bitterly, stepping closer to her. "Your husband doesn't care about you, Lila. If he did, you wouldn't be here with me."
"That's not fair," she snapped, her eyes narrowing. "You don't know what it's like, living in that house, feeling like I'm invisible. I needed—"
"What? Me?" Dominic cut her off, his voice rising. "Is that all this is? Something you needed?"
Lila flinched, her anger flaring. "Don't twist my words, Dominic. You know this is more than that."
"Then stop obsessing over him and focus on us!" Dominic's voice was thunderous now, and his steps toward her were quick and purposeful. "Because I'm not going to keep being second to someone who doesn't even see you."
The air between them was thick with tension, the room electric as their emotions clashed. Lila held her ground, her chin lifting defiantly. "You don't understand," she said, her voice trembling with a mix of anger and something she couldn't name. "What if... what if he's cheating on me?"
Dominic froze, his eyes narrowing. "Cheating on you?" His voice was low now, dangerous.
"It would explain everything," Lila murmured, more to herself than to him. "The distance, the calmness. It's like he's not even trying anymore because he's found someone else."
Dominic's fists clenched at his sides, his jealousy flaring hotter than he thought possible. The thought of Ethan with someone else—hurting Lila, betraying her—was unbearable. "If he is, then he's a fool. And he doesn't deserve you."
Lila's breath hitched at the intensity in his voice, but before she could respond, Dominic grabbed his jacket and stormed toward the door. "Where are you going?" she demanded.
"To clear my head," he muttered, but before he could leave, Lila's own anger bubbled over. She stormed after him, following him into the night.
The parking lot was dimly lit as Dominic leaned against Lila's car, his expression dark. She followed him, her heels clicking against the pavement.
"You can't just walk away when things get hard," she snapped, stopping a few feet from him.
"Funny, coming from you," he shot back, his words cutting deep.
Lila's cheeks flushed with anger. "You don't get to judge me, Dominic. You're just as involved in this as I am."
For a moment, there was only silence, their heavy breathing the only sound in the cool night air. Then, in a sudden, explosive move, Dominic closed the distance between them. His lips crashed against hers, silencing her protests. The kiss was raw and desperate, fueled by anger and passion in equal measure.
Lila melted into him, her hands tangling in his hair as he pressed her against the side of the car. Their movements were frantic, their need for each other overpowering. In that moment, nothing else mattered—not Ethan, not their argument, not the tangled mess of their lives. There was only the fire between them, consuming everything in its path.
Meanwhile, across town, Ethan lay in Tessa's arms, their bodies tangled beneath the sheets. Her head rested on his chest, her fingers tracing lazy patterns on his skin.
"You're quiet tonight," she murmured, her voice soft.
Ethan let out a heavy sigh, his hand brushing through her hair. "Just... thinking."
"About Lila?" Tessa asked, her tone gentle.
"About everything," he admitted. "For the first time, I don't feel consumed by it. By her. But it's... strange, letting go."
Tessa lifted her head to look at him, her eyes filled with understanding. "Sometimes letting go is the only way to find yourself again."
Ethan smiled faintly, his hand cupping her cheek. "I think I already found myself. With you."
Their kiss was slow, tender, and filled with unspoken promises. In Tessa's arms, Ethan felt like he could finally breathe, like he'd found a piece of himself he hadn't known was missing.
Back in the parking lot, Dominic and Lila's passion began to cool, leaving them both breathless and unsteady. As Dominic pulled back, his eyes met hers, and for the first time, Lila saw something she hadn't seen before—an edge of vulnerability.
"We can't keep doing this," she whispered, her voice shaking.
Dominic's jaw tightened. "Then leave him. Be with me."
"I can't," Lila said, tears welling in her eyes. "It's not that simple."
"Make it simple," Dominic said, his voice hardening again. "Or I will."
His words hung in the air, heavy with implication, and Lila's heart raced as she realized just how far Dominic might go to have her all to himself.
As Ethan kissed Tessa goodnight and left her apartment, a text lit up his phone. It was from an unknown number, and the words sent a chill down his spine: You don't know the truth, but you will soon.
Ethan stared at the screen, his mind racing. Was it about Lila? Or was it something else entirely?
Across town, Dominic watched Lila drive away, his mind already working on a plan. He wouldn't lose her—not to Ethan, not to anyone.
The web of lies and passion tightened further, pulling all of them closer to a reckoning none of them could see coming.
