Chapter 21: Seeking Reassurance
Ethan had spent the entire day replaying the scene at the restaurant in his mind. Seeing Lila and Dominic together had sent his heart spiraling, but after she'd explained it away, the knot in his stomach hadn't loosened. He wanted to believe her—he really did—but the doubt lingered like a shadow in the back of his mind. What if she was hiding something? What if he was just too blind to see it? The questions gnawed at him, eating away at the fragments of peace he had left.
Sitting on the couch that evening, his phone rested in his hand like an anchor. He hadn't spoken to Tessa in a while, but tonight felt different. Tonight, his mind was full of questions, and he needed someone who knew Lila well, someone who could offer clarity. The silence in the room was suffocating as he pressed the call button.
Tessa's voice came through, warm but laced with concern. "Ethan? Is everything okay?"
"I don't know, Tessa," he replied, his voice low, almost broken. "I'm... I'm lost. I need to talk to someone. I saw Lila with Dominic today. At the restaurant. She said it was nothing, but... I just can't shake it. I feel like I'm losing her."
There was a brief pause on the other end of the line. He could hear Tessa shifting, probably settling in for a conversation that was going to be more than just a quick check-in.
"I'm sorry, Ethan," she said, her voice soft but firm. "I can't imagine what you're going through. But... Lila is my best friend. She's been going through a lot, and I think... maybe she's just trying to work through things in her own way. You need to trust her, Ethan. I know you want to, but I can hear the doubt in your voice."
His chest tightened. He wanted to trust her, to believe in the love they had shared for so long, but the nagging doubt felt like a vice around his ribs.
"I do trust her, Tessa. But something doesn't feel right. I don't know what it is, but... I don't feel like she's being completely honest with me."
Tessa sighed, a sound filled with empathy and something else, something he couldn't quite place. "I know you're struggling. But sometimes, Ethan... we have to give people space to come to us. Maybe Lila's been pulling away, but that doesn't mean she's hiding anything. You've been through a lot together. Maybe it's time for you both to just talk openly about what's been weighing on your hearts."
He leaned back against the couch, the weight of her words sinking in. Maybe he was looking for answers in all the wrong places, expecting to find clues where there were none. Maybe the truth was right in front of him all along, and he just needed to trust in their connection again.
The conversation began to shift, and as Tessa spoke, a subtle shift occurred in Ethan. The weight of his suspicions began to lessen, but a new kind of uncertainty crept in. There was something deeper, something unspoken, between them. He could feel it now—like an invisible thread pulling him closer to Tessa, but he couldn't place why. Was it just the vulnerability of the moment, or was there more to this growing connection?
Ethan found himself growing quieter as the minutes passed, listening to the comfort of Tessa's voice, a voice that knew him almost as well as Lila did. His thoughts drifted, and for a brief moment, he imagined himself leaning into the conversation more—perhaps a little too much. His heart pounded as the lines between his emotions and reality blurred. He didn't know if it was just loneliness or if he was starting to feel something deeper.
Tessa, sensing the shift in his tone, softened her voice even further. "Ethan, I know this isn't easy. Relationships take work, and sometimes it's hard to see what's really going on. But I believe in you two. I really do."
His mind was a storm, but her words were like calm in the chaos. As he closed his eyes, imagining Lila, imagining the trust he had once felt between them, he couldn't shake the feeling that something was missing. Maybe it was just the growing distance between them—or maybe it was something more.
But tonight, there was something different. He wasn't just feeling lost. He was starting to feel... found. The intimacy between him and Tessa had shifted from something casual to something more intense, but neither of them spoke about it, not yet.
"I appreciate you, Tessa," Ethan whispered, the words carrying more weight than they should have.
There was a long pause before she spoke again, this time her voice tinged with something darker. "Ethan, I've been there. I know what it's like to feel unsure. Just be careful. Sometimes, when we're looking for answers, we end up in places we never meant to be."
His heart raced at her words, and as the silence stretched between them, Ethan realized something: maybe he wasn't the only one keeping secrets.
The line went silent for a moment, and Ethan's pulse quickened. The words she had said echoed in his mind. Be careful. He opened his mouth to respond, but before he could, the soft click of a door opening in the background startled him. His eyes widened as he glanced toward the hallway. He thought he heard Lila's voice. Was she home?
But as he listened closely, he could barely make out the sound of hushed whispers.
Who was she talking to?
